hey guys
Just got a Fender Deluxe Reverb for some smaller gigs. Looking for a great sounding OD/Dist pedal...GO!!!

Which sound do you strive for?

Which speaker?

High Gain?

Diezel?

Marshall?

Tweed?

Dumble?

Hendrix?

SRV?

Suhr riot is the best I've ever used! Took it to work a couple of weeks ago and played it thru some old Fenders and a box ac 15, and a PRS combo and it sounded incredible thru all of them. I could have taken any of those out and gigged with it. Hope this helps.

With the drri I used to have, I found the bright cap on the vibrato channel made choosing OD,s a challenge. Here are a few I liked with my drri and/or with my bandmaster reverb.

Tubescreamer. I use a maxon od808 and od9
Marshall blues breaker, I use a byoc version
Hermida zendrive

My favorite OD is the Fulltone Fulldrive II. I use it with a Deluxe and Twin Reverb every weekend. Vintage mode set MOSFET, gain all the way up. Smooth grind to glassy clean with the twist of the volume knob. Hit the boost for more. Gain all the way up.
Always sounds good. Any situation. Mid gain singing pedal.

I take a Boogie MK III combo, a Suhr Riot and Koko boost to some grab and go smaller gigs. Those two rip on any decent tube amp.

I think Mike Fuller made this one for use with his Fender. I rember seeing clips of him using it in a gig and it sounded damn nice. I like TS clones with Fenders. I get the best results with my Route 66 pedal.

One of my main gigging amps is a '68 Deluxe Reverb. The two pedals that I like the most with it are an old (early 80's) Rat, and a Timmy. The Rat just seems to be a perfect fit for blackface Fenders. Another great DR upgrade is a V30 or similar speaker.

Really just about any dirt pedal sounds good in front of a Deluxe Reverb, depends on the sounds you want.

I owned a Krank distortion pedal for a little while. It matched up really well with a vintage tube Crate head I used to have.

That was not my experience with the DRRI at all. A couple of things that I think contribute to my struggles.

1. Speakers for BF fenders are not always the best choice for overdrive and distortion, they may sound great clean, but be harsh and fizzy the more gain you try to pump through the amp. A reissue Jensen P12R I used in my DRRI I had was this way for sure.
2. BF Fenders are generally combos, so the opened back doesn't lend itself that way for heavy sounds.
3. As I mentioned before in this thread with the DR, on the vibrato channel if you run the amp at lower volumes the bright cap makes using dirt boxes more of a challenge. No bright cap on the normal channel. My current '69 Fender BMR has a switchable bright cap, I almost always leave it off.
4. With the DR in general many seem to be trying to get more punch and tightness from it. Some try putting in 6L6's, but I think its a combination of the 6V6's stock and the output transformer that can hold it back from what people want.

All that said I love DR's. I played a buddies '67 Fender Deluxe reverb and thought it was awesome, I have tried to buy it a number of times. Most people think Fenders take pedals well, and that is generally the case, but the DR in my opinion does not take pedals as well as a BF bassman or Twin reverb.

Yes Twins are typically darker and ballsier so they lend themselves to be more versatile. Standard back line amp.

BYOC OD2 or Fulltone Fulldrive.

Both pedals are around $100 used, and they both sound amazing. Very versatile as well.

Cool fellas!! thanks for the input!! i better get cracking!!
