Really just about any dirt pedal sounds good in front of a Deluxe Reverb, depends on the sounds you want.
That was not my experience with the DRRI at all. A couple of things that I think contribute to my struggles.
1. Speakers for BF fenders are not always the best choice for overdrive and distortion, they may sound great clean, but be harsh and fizzy the more gain you try to pump through the amp. A reissue Jensen P12R I used in my DRRI I had was this way for sure.
2. BF Fenders are generally combos, so the opened back doesn't lend itself that way for heavy sounds.
3. As I mentioned before in this thread with the DR, on the vibrato channel if you run the amp at lower volumes the bright cap makes using dirt boxes more of a challenge. No bright cap on the normal channel. My current '69 Fender BMR has a switchable bright cap, I almost always leave it off.
4. With the DR in general many seem to be trying to get more punch and tightness from it. Some try putting in 6L6's, but I think its a combination of the 6V6's stock and the output transformer that can hold it back from what people want.
All that said I love DR's. I played a buddies '67 Fender Deluxe reverb and thought it was awesome, I have tried to buy it a number of times. Most people think Fenders take pedals well, and that is generally the case, but the DR in my opinion does not take pedals as well as a BF bassman or Twin reverb.
