Good old Boss CE-2 and MXR phaser.

Anyone feel like when all is said and done, that all the new modulation multi effect pedals just can't sound like the classic pedals? I've played with Line 6 products, the PODHD500 was decent but put it up against the individual pedals and they just sound....wrong. I just tried an Eventide Modfactor and I won't hesitate to say that the Eventide pedal can make a lot of different sounds, but hardly any that sound good to me. After 2-3 hours if my old CE-2 and an MXR phaser are still blowing it away then I'm done. I think Eventide needs to stick to rack gear. I'm only curious now to see if Strymon can make a multi effect modulation pedal, the old Glass Nexus was close, really close, but it wasn;t very tweakable and it sounded a little on the mild side.

Other guys are making good individual pedal like Retrosonic, Strymon, Hartman, etc. Let's see who makes a great sounding multi modulation pedal.

I find that my preference is toward MXR pedals too (Phaser, Flanger, Dyna Comp). I loved my old mij CE2 (got stolen). They have such a specific tonal characteristic that I am used to, that when I hear other brands, I try to dial in or dial out as the case may be, those familiar sounds and haven't been able to beat them.

Agreed! Nobody has made phase or flange as good as analog.

Strymon has come pretty close though.

I have two CE-2's that are awesome. Had them forever too. Also have a few Phase 90's and 100, they are awesome too.

That said putting them alongside the RP1000's models of them, they are the same (CE-2 that is). Have not compared the Phase 90's.

those old pedals rule. I still also prefer the older Overdrives than the boutique stuff. Although the Cusak V2 Screamer is an exception for me.

The only booteek stuff I care about are the overdrives and of course reverb. Boss delay, Boss chorus, Boss tuner, cheap old early 70's Crybaby. I've tried a load of chorus pedals and I got rid of them all and use my old Boss CE-5. I don't like a lush analog delay, I prefer the bitier CE-5 or CH-1 tone. I also prefer digital delay to analog. I like a pristine repeat.

The booteek overdrives are MUCH better than old overdrives. At least for me. For instance my Fulldrive II Mosfets work with ANY amp I've ever ran them into. Matchless, Vox, Fender, Marshall, Mesa, Soldano, ENGL, etc...... Old overdrives seem more picky to me.

The TS-9 is a Baked Keeley. The Fulldrive is running 18v.

I still have my Glass Nexus from that batch 2 or so years ago after talking to you about it..
For me it comes closest as I can possibly get to a JC120 cleans with out actually playing through one, Certainly doest hurt that it doesnt suck the tone out of whatever I am playing it through also.
How ever an extra Adjustment knob for Modulations like for Depth on the Chorus would have made it for me anyways.

The only thing that will replace my Glass Nexus is if Strymon makes another version with more modulation adjustment and hopefully a set of double input/outputs with the ability to run modulation out front and the delay/verb in the loop

Maybe Analogman or Restrosonic. But you'll pay more for those and you can still get a MIJ CE-2 for 100 bucks.

Only boutique pedal I have is a tubevibe but that is because it is the shit. Ok and a psonic 3:14 but it has mojo and sounds just plain nasty in a good way. Those Eventide stomps are nuts, massive manuals just to get what a EVH script phase 90 can do????? Yeah right

I never played a CE2 but I just picked up a used Delta Lab chorus from GC for $29 and I think it sounds awesome. I have used an Arion SCH1 since the 80's and always though it had a kinda cold hollow sound. I never understood why everyone raved over it. The delta lab is very warm and full without that thin hollow sound that a lot of chorus pedals seem to have.

But it can't sound as good as a Phase 90. I tried Modfactor settings from the website of what a few called "close" to a phase 90. And sure, if you think a phase 90 sounds like a spastic Flanger then sure, why not! Me, I like a phaser to sound like a phaser.

I think I'm the only guitar player who likes chorus and doesn't really care for the old Made in Japan Boss CE-2 pedal. I've owned 3 and they all added this hint of a metallic ring to the sound that I did not care for. I sold my original one many years ago and then read how everybody loves them and figured the one I had wasn't working right or I had it dialed in wrong--so I bought another and it sounded the same as the first one-so I sold that too. Then I waited a few years and repeated the process. I prefer the the Boss CH-1 pedal.

I have tried tons of new and old chorus pedals.. But to me, nothing does as good of a chorus/modulation as the old Roland SDE-1000/3000 in a Wet/Dry setup. I set them up with a super fast delay (26ms, so you can't even really hear the delay) and have the modulation set slow and deep. It's probably the biggest chorus type sound i have heard and without a doubt the warmest!

I like the TC Corona chorus. It does a good job of sitting inside the tone if you know what I mean. The CE-2 always seemed too thick sounding. One old pedal I haven't found an equivalent too is the old mid 80's Ibanez AD9 delay. The reissue doesn't even come close.

I'm not saying the Corona sounds like the CE-2. It doesnt, but I was never a fan of that pedal...

I agree though about the Phase 90... Nothing else sounds as good IMO. I'm using an EH Nano Small Stone Phaser right now, but it's not quite as magical sounding as a script logo Phase 90

And if there's no phase 90 around the Whirlwind Orange Box is pretty much the same but true bypass.

And I like the CE-2 the best because it sounds soo good with gain. Listen to this guy, he's been using a CE-2 since forever and an old Boss overdrive, the yellow one with 2 knobs. But you can tell how well the CE-2 fits over his Marshall tone here.
