Good pedal for solos with these amps? Ignore my other post!

A friend gave me a brand new Maxon 808 and I have been using it with 4 diff amps. Great. adds some mids, cuts lows a bit, and makes soloing a breeze!

Other things I use are Treble Boosters cause I'm a Blackmore fan

I thought they sounded sort of cheap?

The Maxon? A TS boost. In fact I may get a FD-II again. I always liked the way it sounded boosted a gain channel.

Treble Booster? I got 3 BSM Treble Boosters. They are awesome (for me)

The Rodenberg is more open, and less harsh than the RC, the Analogman Kot is the most dynamic TS (it´s construction derives from different circuit than the TS/Rodenberg/Maxon) with a lot oh headroom, but has another voicing than the Rodenberg, feels different less cool in front of the Marshall, the Xotic RC has less headroom and is also a bit harsh, prefer the OCD.....it depends what sound you are after, in front of which Amp, another cool superior TS (kills nearly all the American TS Clones) with a sweeter! footprint is the German Vahlbruch Jewell Drive....if you like the quite cleanish RC try the German Okko Twin Sonic, like it better, more headroom, if you prefer the OCD sound/behaviour the German Baldringer Dual Drive is also better, more flexible, but similar.

I guess it depends on what amp you're using but with the Mesa Electra Dyne I like the BB Preamp the best. And I use this amp like I would a Marshall, just enough gain from the amp for a crunch sound then the pedal kicks it over the top.

I've owned and tried the Suhr Koko boost, Carl Martin Plexitone, OD820, OCD versions 2,3,4, Suhr Riot, Tim and Timmy, and I like the BB Preamp the best. Level up high and gain down low. The Carl Martin and OD820 are cool though.

Rich, FWIW I liked the Bogner 20th boosted. I thought stock it had decent gain but really not a whole lot, not what I'd call high gain. But the Electra Dyne doesn't have a lot of gain either unless it's cranked and this fucking thing goes from off to LOUD. But the Dyne loves pedals and I liked boosting the 20th as well. Think of it as just more sounds with and without pedals.

The only amps that don't need pedals are the extreme gain boxes like Engl or Mesa Mark amps like the III and IV, then they just turn the amps into Niagra Falls.

To me the OCD is best into a clean amp, not as a lead boost.

Dan, wow, I think the 20th Shiva has too much gain for my needs. We only go as heavy as Metallica, Alice in Chains and Tool and I never take the gain past 1:00! I only am going to use the boost when I run less gain. But stock, the 20th and PWE have loads and loads of gain, more than I would need, even for thrash. Kick in the built in solo boost and it adds more gain. Don't forget the Mode switch, man...tons of gain, LOL.
So, when playing thinfs like Alice in Chains or Metallica, I use the amp's gain for everything, just kick in the solo boost for leads.
When playing something like Radio Head, Matthew Sweet or Pearl Jam, I either run my volume lower or the amp's gain lower. That is when I use a pedal for leads to add some juice, so it doesn't have to be a high gain or aggressive pedal, just add a touch of gain and mids to make the leads greasy and easier to sustain and to get rich harmonics. Xotic has been the best thus far.

No, the Xotic RC is a bit harsh, sorry, the BB is quite TS with more gain, but not as open and big.

Do not expect that the Rodenberg is 100% better it is 10-20 % , more than a tube swap), I have the OCD4, the Xotix RC, the koko and the Rodenberg, will do some comparison files with my stock marshall!

Probably in front of some High Gain Monsters it will not make that a big difference....

Btw. I did not try the Fulltone Fat Boost, never heard the plimsoul.....next month!

ive been using vertex plexitone for marshall crunch and ethos for an amazing lead pedal that is the spitting image of a dumble preamp in design but sounds like part fuchs, eggie ie4, part mesa mark I/II, and part carol ann. ej/joe b. type lead sounds with a ton of range from smooth to edgy and killer sustain.

For solos I always us a TS because the mid hump cuts through the band.
For me its a Keeley Baked TS-9.

Tough to beat, it does what it does well. You want a solo to jump out, adding mids can do that.

But an OD pedal in front of a high gain amp, always seems to sound harsh. Maybe something in the loop to add mids and saturation?

A boost in the loop will do just that, boost. It won't add very much saturation. I've been using a Koko in the loop as a boost for solos, the mid boost side works great for this. I tried it out front but with an already driven amp in didn't add volume just more grind. It would be awesome to be able to have the reg. boost out front and the mid in the loop.

I'm going to mention what I always do in this situation, Catalinbread Naga Viper. It says treble boost but it can run up to full bandwidth. Great boost pedal. I've used it to push crunchy amps and I've used it to take clean amps to crunch. Awesome pedal.

Try a Bogner Red

You can dial it very low like a boost, the set the controls for the boos feature on the pedal o come on strong, like another amp.

It is a pretty amazing pedal. Like with my DSL, on the clean channel I have Marshall good clean, a little burn, or a Bogner Red channel cranked. Then on the DSL lead channel I can use that crunch and add step 1 from the Red to get super crunch.

Get fat tone by EQ switches or 20th Aniv switch.
