Got my amp back from the tech today and...

...And they didn't fix it. They had it for a month now and didn't fix it at all, and to top that off the presence circuit doesn't work now, and they did a pretty bad job inside the amp. They burned some of the covering off of a cap, gouged a couple traces and soldered lugs to them to reconnect them, and re-soldered some resistors back to the board poorly. I should've taken my amp to a better tech, and saved the one month wait on my amp making no progress.

I am going to call a different tech, and see if they can figure out what is wrong with my amp.

Oh man, sorry to hear that! Definitely get it to someone good. I've always been lucky to know good techs.

why ship it to some dude when there are techs here. if we F something up you can kill us on the forum. I would make extra sure its right.. whats the prob?

The problem with my amp is, that there is a loud hum when on the lead and clean channel, but when on the clean channel, there is also a loud buzz. This is just the amp alone, nothing plugged in the fx loop, and no guitar plugged in. The hum and buzz is affected by the master, and now the presence knob doesn't do anything.

For sure. Send it to Jerry-he's good people. He'll treat you and your amp with respect and care.

There is one more tech I can try. He Mods marshall's and repairs amps, he modded a friend of mines JCM 800. So if this doesn't work out, I will send it to Jerry.

I just got to crank my amp tonight, and the presence circuit works. The master has to be above 2 for the presence knob to work.

jerry p from FJA is in lakeland now. A great resource just down the road

I should have specified that

Mesa Boogie 50 caliber +

you're kidding?

i had problems with my 50 cal+
took it to 4 different "techs" where i live (top-5 major US city)
spent i don't know how much money
every one of them gave me a BS story piled high as Mt Everest

then i finally had to send it to a guy named "monsta-tone" from the grail tone forum out in new mexico.
he said there were some LDRs that didn't work properly. and some capacitors. maybe a filter capacitor? i don't remember. and he said that a resistor was fried.

i was ripped off so colossally by one authorized MB-licenced tech that i had to send a steaming-mad letter to Mesa Boogie headquarters about that experience.

i would say, go to grail tone forum and do a search for monsta-tone (monstatone) and send your amp to him. by now, he knows that particular amp blindfolded

edit: actually, here's his email andy@amps-tubes.com

I know andy (monsta-tone) and I have been talking to him about my amp, but I'm not sure if I want to send my amp all the way to Hawaii, the shipping would be pretty expensive, and then the repair cost on top of that.

I thought monsta-tone is in Silver City, New Mexico

Andy is a great tech and a great guy. If I didn't roll my own, I would send my amps to him or Jerry Dyer...

Send it to Jerry. He fixed and modded my old Dual Rectifier. There was an issue with an LDR that was not discovered by my local techs after a couple trips to the shop. I sent it to Jerry, and he did some additional trouble shooting with Mesa and figured it out.

Monsta Tone is good, I may be sending my mark iv to him for some things.

but why not call Mesa and get a quote from them??

i've got a similar problem where i live. there are a couple of techs i can take my stuff to if it isn't really complicated.. or if it involves repairing an amp that is stock. if it's something that's troublesome i would rather send it to a fellow forumite for repair. it just takes time to save up the money for shipping plus repair. that's where i'm at with my dsl right now. damn bias drift. :gethim:

He was, but then he moved to Washington, then down to Hawaii.

Because Mesa said it is the normal noise this amp makes, and I call B/S on their part... I bet they just want to work on newer amps, and not "waste" their time with this older amp. :( :aww:

lame....well go over to the boogie board or visit his website and hit up monsta tone, he IS in fact in hawaii currently, but he's a good guy and has decent prices.
plus the fact he is a mesa authorized tech makes me feel better than just handing it over to anyone.
GOOD LUCK!
