Hey guys,

I just got a Herbert MK.I :) Guess I can post the serial at some point as well, coz I don't know its year. Anyway I haven't really got a chance to try it loud as the neighbors been around lately but my first impressions are not as I expected. Either I'm doing something wrong or there is something wrong with the amp. The tone is very good but there is a whole lot of fizziness/fuzziness to the distortion. Like its too treble, or grainy. Like many bees are added to the real tone of the amp. And I can't get rid of it. I tried different stuff like turning down presence all the way etc, but it seems to be always there and not in a pleasant way :( It seems a bit strange. Oh and also when I turn the volumes all the way down I can still hear the guitar but this time just the fuzzy treble tone remains if that makes any sense. The amp has EL34s and my cab is 2x12 V30s. In any case I don't think the tubes or the cab can make this much of a difference. Any ideas??

Congrats on your Herbert! Amazing amp!

Sounds like you are having some tube issues. Herbert is not fizzy. I would try swapping out the tubes. I can't say whether it is pre amp or power amp, sounds like pre amp to me.

Anyway, try some new tubes and see if that does the trick. Shipping can be hellish on tubes.

Good luck

Welcome to the board Shadowdevourer.

Please check the amp at higher volume levels.
The volume pots don´t cut the signal completely.
That is not an issue.

Best,
Peter

Turn the Mid Cut off and see if it's fuzzy. With Mid Cut and low Volume = why did you buy a 180 watt monster German tube amp.

Try swapping preamp tubes if it's still present. Out of the 10 Herberts I have ever played, none of them had the type of tone you are describing. Especially not my Herbert.

:D Yea I dont know what I was thinking it has more volume than sense.. Kidding aside, it was actually a good deal and a great future investment for me but unfortunately at the moment I am surrounded by neighbours. However, I will try out louder volumes today. In any case, ofc I have tried without the mid-cut and all but what surprised me is that I kept hearing about how good this amp is on bedroom levels as well. So that is why I was wondering. I admit that Im a tube noob and I might take it to Peter soon just to have the tubes checked to make sure. Anyways I have no doubts that it as a 180w beast of an amp.

herbert not bad for bedroom.
Am running hagen and major w/d w 4x12 cabinets for each.
theres a picture somewhere i posted here for my bedroom.
If i can't shake the bed with wifey, than i shake her with ampage

\:D/

I have a mk1 and its not fizzy at all. at any vol level...heck I think its one of the best sounding amps for low vol playing Ive ever heard...SO im with the others that u got a bad tube in there.... My herberts getting 6 new JJ's kt77 today just waiting for my amp guy to come bias her up for me ...I havent replaced all my pre amp tubes yet...3 new Ruby ..prob buy the other 3 next pay day...

I know most preffer the rubys in the diezels ..but to my ear so far Tung Sol's sound better. thats what in there now..Well see when the rubys get here ..but Ill prob go back to the tung sol though.

Anyway hope u get her figured out..sure its tubes. Try not to lust over it when your not playing :) I know I do

What does the clean channel sound like?
This is a Herbert.

NO CLEAN FOR YOU!!!

  ....all shittin' aside, the clean on the 'Bert is a nice nice clean. For sure, one of the nicest.

Hey guys, thanks for your replies. At higher volumes the amp is definitely a beast, even around 8-9 o'clock everything in the room shakes lol....it's insaneee...the governor had to send an earthquake team :p
oh and the cleans are amazing, simply beautiful, crystal and sharp. as mesa mentioned above when im outside or not playing all i think about still is the amp :)
other than that i ll have the preamp tubes checked at some point.

Cool.

High Grade Chinese 12AX7 for preamp.

And although Papa recommends the 77s in all his amps nowadays, gotta say, the COOLEST feature of the Herbert is being able to pair them up. So cool. Experiment and enjoy!!!

Hi, I own a Herbert MkI for years and the tone has always been great even at low level...until now !!! But I've received new tubes from Peter and they'll be replaced in the next few days :-)

And folks, I've discovered this forum last week and I've been totally GASED !!!!

I'm trying to record in my humble little room studio and Herbert is easy to record...unlike my Mesa Boogie Mk V (grrrr....can't get a diezel sound out of this amp !!!!).
So I've been very interested in the Hagen...within a few days, Hagen has become an obsession...and tonight, it has been metamorphosed in an order :-)))))))))
I'va also ordered Two Notes Torpedo VB-101 as it's not easy to play/record after work in a house full of family (and a shitty acoustical room...), I think it'll be better than my Palmer.

So...wish me good luck to sell my Mesa !!! I just could not WAIT !!!

PS: I just curiously checked...I bought Herbert in february 2007

Congrats on the Hagen order - very very fun amp, and really a great sound one at that

Every channel on the hagen is gold
You will have a blast no doubt.

The herbert isnt for bedroom use. The forums have been to crazy these past years, people talking about tube amps as bedroom amps. I also use my Herbert at Home. The things is; no tube amp is a bedroom amp, no mather how many whatts

But i rock the shit out of my Herbert at home. Ilove the tone at appartment volumes and ill always preferr the dynamics off a tube amp, no mather the volume i have the amp set at.

For recording and for real silent playing i use impulses now a days.

Enjoy the amp and try to get vermiliar with how the eq reacts, this will safe you at any volume.

docben: congratz on your new amp, let us know how you find it :)

shadow070: you mention impulses, i never tried this, could you tell me more about it? Is it possible to connect Herbert's compensated out directly into a soundcard for recording??

Shadowdevourer : I connect Herbert into a Palmer PG04 > Apogee Duet 2 > Cubase 6.5... And soon, it'll be Herbert/Hagen > Two Notes Torpedo VB101 > Apogee Duet 2 > Cubase 6.5

well, you should use youre fx send for this.
I use the Two-Notes modern and some redwirez impulses.

Chain: guitar to amp (amp should be connected to a cabinet) ->fx send to mic preamp -> In logic i put the IR

I must say. I havent played the Herbert for abour 2 months now. Im bussy moving and im temporarely in an appartment where its not posible to play the amp. I didnt bring the amp along for now, but im planning to bring it within 2 weeks. The IR solution is the best way to go.
The two-notes modern software i use is amazing.
