got that old JCM800 cab today!

Take the wheels off the 800 cab and sit it directly on the floor. That should smooth out the tone and thicken/darken it up.

dose the grill cloth have any rips in it? I only ask because that looks alot like my old cab

The wheels are staying... Ive carried my laney cab too much, i want to roll now! As for the cloth, no tears that i can see. It does say Ace on the back though. Ace Frehley? Hmmm

get the code dates off the old speakers and we can date that cab for you

where would they be found? all the numbers i see on the speakers are Type : T 3577 and ER10 ( on the metal). also, they say 15 Ohms! the ones in my Laney said 16...so, these seem to be a bit older. ill look at the other one i pulled out and see if i can see any other numbers...

also, i put the 2 WGS Retro 30s in the top of the cab. MY GOD WHAT A DIFFERENCE. better everything. highs are nice, and can be harsh if i dial a ton in, but even with a good bit theyre pretty smooth! mids are nice, not too grating or honky. lows are decent...but then again, this is at really low volume. im running my Single Recto into it, since my Ultra is in the car, ill try it out later.

the Recto pairs really well with these speakers. REALLY well. i guess thats why V30s are the preferred speakers for them. they just fit together. the high mids of the speaker, combined with the low mids of the amp, just blends nicely. the Recto is still not my bag, but its nice to have it around until i sell it. id like to crank it but, at this time i cant LOL i cant wait till the G12T75s come in...i can finally pull the last 2 M70s out and be rid of them. the Retros have about the same midrange as the 70s, but they destroy them everywhere else in the spectrum. seem much louder too, which would be because of the better sensitivity rating im assuming (i think 70s are around 97-98dBs? the 30s are 100...)

so yea...much happier already. oh, another thing about the bass...all the screws are NOT in on the back. i only put 4 back in, just to keep the back on until the other speakers get here. so putting all the screws back in should help the bass a little. i also checked and tightened up all the screws in the cab while i was in there, and checked the wiring. at some point someone must have done some wiring work because the soldering is HORRIBLE. it works, but its not nice looking. i stripped the wires i used so i could have new, fresh wire to solder with, and ill do the same for the bottom speakers. also, the cab has 3 inputs...1 jack in a big plate, with 2 smaller jacks, flush with the face of the back, on either side. im assuming (theres that word again...) that someone changed it from a stereo cab into a mono cab at some point? or maybe it was stereo capable, with a mono jack as well? interesting possibilities here, i could hook the stereo jacks up again and use 2 rigs into one cab maybe? tell me more! please!

anyway...yea, im very happy with the Retro 30s. i will try the Peavey into this cab shortly to see how it sounds with those speakers. i know how it sounds with the HM75's, which are awesome, but if the Retro 30s sound great paired with T75s, i might just get another set to go into the Laney...

I knew you'd like the Retro 30's.
I've currently got my Single Recto setup for low-mid volume playing so I can give you settings that may also work for you. Settings are out of /10.
Output Volume - 5
Master - 1
Presence - 4
Bass - 8
Mids - 5
Treble - 5
Gain - 7
Modern mode, no boost, EL34's, w/ EMG 81 into V30's.

ER10 is the code date,It means the speakers were made on May 10 1983 so your cabinet is an 83

As do I, my friend.
Only they breakup too fast at really high volumes since it's only 50 watts. So I keep that amp dialed in for playing at more reasonable volume levels, but it works out just fine cause even that is loud enough for most uses. And it still sounds thick, juicy and mean.
I keep my 100 watters for peeling paint volume levels, no prob there.

well, i just hooked up the Ultra Plus...sweet jesus lord in heaven. i always thought the Ultra sounded a little hollow, a little "djenty", pardon the language LOL now i really realize, its got a huge thing to do with the speakers. the 75s sound awesome, but theyre missing some mids (obviously...). the 30s bring those mids back and its just huge and crunchy. that settles it...i need to get Retro 30s for the Laney cab and that will bring the highs and bass in balance with the mids of the Retros. its just a huge wow factor. seriously awesome tone.

of course, id be perfectly happy with 4 Retro 30s in a cab...but why not mix? the 75s seem a little looser than the 30s, but the 30s need to break in. im sold on WGS speakers period. the Retros sound awesome, the HM75s sound amazing...and my Ultra has never sounded better.

if i only knew that the G12M70s were so horrible back when i got the Laney cab i wouldnt have had to suffer through them for so long...

and i agree about the Single breaking up pretty quickly...i kind of like that though. i would keep the gain around 1:30 and as the output went up it just started to sound huge. good thing about the Ultra is it has a half power switch...so if i dont feel like peeling paint i can just flip it to 60 watts. but whats the fun in that?

all is well

G12t75s came in today, cab sounds great! i think i want to find someone at Celestion who helped design the G12M70, and drop kick them for thinking they had a good sound...lol

;)

those speakers are shit IMHO!

and, for the record, my 800 cab is all original, and had celestion 100 watters in them. i have no idea what marshall may have sent different cabs out with back then though.

you should try something diffferent in there for 100$ (like vin 30's, t75s, even 80's) and my guess is you'll dump those 70s.

sell em on ebay...some guys LOVE those things...BLECH!!!!!

dunno how much id get for them honestly...a couple of them have what looks to be mold on them! maybe its not mold, but when i pulled them out i just kinda gagged and dry heaved...mold cant be good for tone! and neither can the horrible solder connections that i saw. i mean, im not the best at soldering but...damn!

^ I hate seeing mold on speakers. I passed on buying a rare set of speakers once I saw mold. As long as you report it when you sell it, you should be okay though....

Oh i wouldn't lie about it for sure. But it will lower the value, so im prepared for that. Im just glad i have them out of that cab. Sounds great with nice speakers, and im sure as they break in it will only get better!
