Oooy... now you've gone and done it! May as well go over to TGP today and list your hate for D-style amps too!
I know. Why would he be in a list of great guitar playing?

I always felt Slash's tone had the basis for a great tone....that marshall growl and rawness was there in spades. However, it always just seemed thin and too trebly.

Paul Gilbert-yeah if he's playing something unaccompanied his tone is a bit lacking, but with a band sounds alright.

Rik Emmet-would have to agree with this one. Thin and cheesy most of the time.

Steve Vai-Not a big fan of his over-saturated ultra thin tone.

Tony MacAlpine-Not sure what is up with this guy, for being such a great player his tone is always bad.

Randy Rhoads-I'm usually not in favor of altering classic recordings, but I would like to hear someone re-engineer the 2 Ozzy discs with A Marsha or some better sounding Marshall Amp.

Kirk Hammet-where do we start?

BTW- I like and listen to all of these guys on the list, just left  on some of these getting the green light to be immortalized on a recording.

Michael Romeo (save for the last 2 Symphony X CDs).

Yeah he finally got some good tube amps. I read an interview with him once and he said he hates messing with tube amps, that's why he was using SS.

Yeah but JAke showcased he could really play without the need for too many effects like he had used on Ultimate Sin or Bark at the moon. I'd say his tone here is awesome but maybe the effects are lacking.. does that constitute tone suckage?

I always thought Kirk had above average lead tones, it was his playing that went to hell after a while. Kind of the reverse of this list   My vote goes for Gilbert, insane player with thin, brittle, crap tone. Just because it's been (much) better as of late doesn't give him a free pass for the rest of it IMO.

On some recordings I didn't like Eddie's tones but he always seem to make it work for him. That said.... I personally didn't like it.

Wow, I loved his tone on all of the Badlands stuff. I thought it was great to hear him play with such a raw, in-your-face Marshall tone as opposed to the over-processed sound he always had with Ozzy.

One of my favorites:

I like that Badlands tone, thick-brontosaurus on a spit-heavy Marshall sound...would like to be able to get that one.

badlands and cry of love were killer but done in by Seattle grunge

if they would have come out today, different story
I think the industry is ready for a quality old school dinosaur rock band or two to hit

that first badlands lp is so under rated
i liked the stripped down tone on it
it was kinda overtly kossof/pagey but that is a good thing

I completely agree. I liked some of the bands in the grunge scene but it's sad that bands like Badlands and COL got over shadowed by that scene.
