Prior to Trump talking about Greenland the Danes were pretty vocal about Greenland being in serious danger of coming under the thumb of Russia and China. The EU ignored them. Trump starts talking about securing Greenland and look what happens.Seems to be par for the course with these European nations. DJT floats some random thought. Whatever country pitches a fit and does all kinds of posturing. Then in the end they walk it all back and want to talk.
I still don't see Denmark giving up Greenland to the US in any way, even by sale. If decent talks take place I see Denmark granting the US a good chunk of mineral rights and allowance for more security/military bases. In exchange the US would take on the role of protecting Greenland for Denmark a maybe some profit sharing sort of thing with the people of Greenland.
To supplement our needs so we don't burn though our own stockpile then become fully dependent on other countries for resources in the future. Why would the US use Greenland for data centers instead of Alaska? Why would we mine rare Earths there when the largest deposits in the world are in Wyoming?![]()
Do you not understand the strategic importance of Greenland ?Is the plan we get Greenland in exchange for basically full commitment to get rid of Putin?
Da fuck is in Greenland? Their entire economy is based around fish.

Maybe, but Hawaii and Alaska made more sense at the time.Too bad, we didn't take it during or after WW2.
we already owned Alaska and Hawaii by that time. Greenland was ripe for the taking after WW2 with the devastation in Europe after the war.Maybe, but Hawaii and Alaska made more sense at the time.
I'm not disagreeing that it might have been easy to occupy Greenland, but for what purpose. The bigger threat would have come from the west, at least in the context of 1950s geopolitics. Today, it's different.we already owned Alaska and Hawaii by that time. Greenland was ripe for the taking after WW2 with the devastation in Europe after the war.
Afterall, we're still occupying Germany and Japan today, though much less than in the past. Greenland would have been easy to occupy in 1945 if we wanted it then.
No it wouldn’t. Just because we sat down with them at Potsdam, nobody was under the impression that the soviets were our friends. China sure as fuck wasn’t our enemy since we just saved their asses. Japan was done. Where was the threat from the west ?I'm not disagreeing that it might have been easy to occupy Greenland, but for what purpose. The bigger threat would have come from the west, at least in the context of 1950s geopolitics. Today, it's different.
That was my initial point, giving statehood to HI and AK as we were entering the peak of the cold war. We had a state, not a territory, 60 miles west from the Russian mainland. AK statehood made more strategic sense than occupying or owning Greenland. And easy and uninterrupted access to natural resources...No it wouldn’t. And it didn't prevent them from getting attackedThey were both already US territories.
And it didn't prevent them from getting attacked
Post war into the cold war, we had nuclear warheads scattered across Europe (UK, Italy) and middle east (Turkey) aimed at Moscow. Did Greenland really matter at that point?Eastern Russia isn't vital to command and control, other than the naval base at Vladivostok - which I think is their only warm water port in the Pacific,
Greenland is closer to Moscow
That means the distraction is working.Doesn't really matter to me; I didn't care before until it was brought up by Trump; I want Greenland on principle now.![]()
