ground loop hum in racks

so, I'm familiar with the issue of extra hum induced in rack rigs where you need to isolate each piece from the rails of the rack it's mounted on.
previously, I used Hum-Frees to take care of the problem and they worked great.

I'm putting together a new rack rig now and I only have one set (4) of the humfrees - I can only isolate one piece in the rack using these.

luckily I have a pretty simple set up -
Power Conditioner
Preamp
Power Amp

so, which one should I put the humfrees on until I can pick up some more?

Have you tried putting it together without the humfrees first? No point in spending money if there's no need to, after all.

good point, I agree and I plan on trying everything without the humfrees tomorrow as soon as I receive my preamp.

just trying to get some knowledge ahead of time :)

btw, i fucking love that pic of what I can only describe as "The Bugera Badass"
where's that from?

It's a pic of Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth with a wall of Larry amps. Donbarzini photoshopped all the Larry logos into Bugera logos, and Larry flooded his PM box until he took it down. Since donbarzini left the forum, I figured I'd help pay homage to him.

Try it with no hum-frees first.
Then if you have a hum, simply lift the ground on the preamp with one of those grey adapters.
I can't think of any way you would get a ground loop hum with that simple of a setup.
I use the humfrees in my 20 spaced guitar rig, but that is really more for protecting the units from getting scratched by the screws.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. I can't seem to remember if my previous rack rig (very very similar) actually had hum problems or not. But I'm guessing it did if I have these still.

sorry, I'm unfamiliar with the grey adapter you are talking about....can someone link me?

i thought he meant this to life the ground prong:

Yep.....
They are either grey or Orange and cost about a buck.

i mounted a gfci outdoor outlet in the back of my rack with about a 15 foot 10 gauge heavy duty cable attached so i can just plug in and go. then i have a radio shack electronic surge protector. then my ar117 constant power filter plugs into that.

the radio shack surge was cheap, it works and it's simliar to this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... eCustomId=

im going to try putting a grey adaptor on each piece of gear in my rack as i get a nasty loop also.
