Guitar Center recording classes?

Ill be the first to say most gc people I've encountered were nice but weren't very knowledgeable.

I'll also be the first to admit I suck at recording. I would like to think It's because we have cheap mics and cheap recording gear overall, but I really don't know much about it.

GC is offering free recording classes in Jan. And my band is getting ready to self record.

Do you think I could learn something?

I read alot online but love hands on and having things shown to me but would it be a waste of time?

It sounds like chance to learn what recording gear GC sells.

I went to them and got the dirt cheap Pre-Sonus rig pack. I guess it depends on the location to if they know much. Here, the young guy teaching knew 3 or 4 platforms and taught them all if specific questions were asked. There was always a half hour of questions after each class. In 4 classes he covered a ton of ground.

Definitely worth trying. Learning something for free? Take what you can use and leave the rest. They did not hype any one package over the other. I had a few questions on monitors, mics, drum packages, etc. Some were free with add ons or upgrades to buy at a discount.
 
Go to the 1st one and see if you learn anything. Free is free.
 
Don't know about your specific store but they all follow the same lesson plan. I work at the one down here in Tampa and the lessons they give are aimed at complete beginners, same with the new guitar lessons, ukulele lessons, guitar maintenance lessons... Each week the lesson is exactly the same (or supposed to be) so going more than once has no benefit. You'll learn SOOOOOOO much more just from trial and error and reading than you'll ever learn from those classes.
 
I actually checked these out a few months ago. Like stated before....free is free. I wasn't dazzled by what I heard in the actual classes. However, I ended up having some cool conversations with the instructor and a few other attendees afterwards that helped me out.
