I agree, just bustin your balls ;)

i know

remember kids, if somebody trys to sell you something vintage, and it trys to suck your balls, it's definitely not vintage

I've been lucky with the Guitar Center near where I work, there are a few guys who know what they are talking about. Definitely a lot of the people that don't have a clue out there, but there is always the occasional gear head on staff. The bass player in the band I am currently in use to work at a GC, after working in artist relations, as a manufacturer rep, and doing clinics rep for companies like Aria, Alembic and Zon.

OTOH, sometimes it works out to your advantage for them to not know too much: Picked up the last Jackson built/started in 1983, first year of the custom shop stuff. It's a bass, black, neck-thru, # J0034, made for Sam Ash 48th St. (Verified with a San Dimas collector, he also sent me a copy of the serial number log.) Made a sweet Christmas gift for my son, $500. It was in pretty good shape, too.

I like the GC near me. They carry brands like Diezel, Bad Cat, Soldano, VHT, Cornford, Two Rock, Mesa and etc. I've never had a problem there. I generally don't talk to the employees, though. I go in, look around, if I see something I like I'll ask to try it out. If I like it, I'll get it (maybe). If I don't, I leave. Simple as that. I don't need anybody telling me about features and shit about an amp because I honestly know more about the gear than anybody who works there. So there's no point in even getting into a gear discussion in the first place.

The GC near me has a bunch of dorks working there. That is for sure

Edit - Well there is this one cool dude

Does anyone know what the guys who work at GC normally get paid?

They make min around here ..... the turn over is very fast there. Most people last less than 3 months.

When the Mesa Roadking came out they had several new amps all set up, plugged in and running. None of them had any powertubes in them.

..... a other time when asked what I use, after telling them they asked me if I ever checked out a Create ? I told them I have ...... they then started telling me about how great they are and how I should have one.

The term vintage only means from a other earlier time or era ..... anything no matter what it is that is 20 years old is vintage, even if the term is not normally used this way. Some things it is much less than 10 years. Go look up the definition if you do not believe me.

I was asked to play a wedding ceremony as a favor for a co-worker (weddings are not a usual gig for me). The bride asked if I could play the Hawaiian song by IZ called "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on a Ukulele. So I stopped into GC to see if they had a transducer pick-up for the top of the Uke. When I asked the punk behind the counter if they had any in stock he asked me what I was going to put it on. After I said a Ukulele I looked up at him and he was trying to hold back laughter. It took everything I had not to reach across the counter and rip the lip ring out of the Green Day worshiping idiot. Why do the douchbags that work there ask unimportant questions and then proceed to be dicks? Just get me what I asked for and SHUT THE FUCK UP!

These are some funny ass stories. Not knowing what a MIDI cable or a 5150 is? Good stuff guys. I have 2 Guitar Centers here in Houston. Luckily I'm pretty tight with one of the managers and he gives me good deals and knows his stuff. The other people in the store? :gethim:

As an English Major I hear ya. As a musician, Motley Crue is NOT classic rock...

I went into a local GC and they had a used Mesa Mark III head, the salesman said it sucked because it had no gain at all to it. I go over, plug in, tweak it for 3 seconds, and watch his jaw hit the floor. I had to explain volume 1 to him, and the rest of the amp for that matter.

Another favorite of mine:

"See, if you buy a more expensive wireless, it will have selectable channels. That's important, because the cheap one may work here, but not in Detroit or Chicago. If you're going to be touring, you need selectable channels so you know that it will work everywhere."

Pffftt.. HAHAHAHA.

I live in the UK, over here we have Dawsons which is the equvilent.

I phoned up once asking if they'd fix my 5150 and they said they would send it to Peavey. I think their tech is limited to setups and pickup installation. One of the guys there was nice enough to direct me to the independant tech I use now, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the tech he used rather than getting it free from his place of work though, cause one of the guys there, the bass guy is very down to earth and informative. - The guitar guy there is a douchebag though.

I get treated like shit beacuse I'm 5 foot 8, sixteen and don't look like I can play guitar to a decent standard, there's another, much smaller store called Guitarworks which is great, it's not a chain, fairly small but they stock Blackstar, PRS, THD, Laney, and they're great guys, know their stuff and their inhouse tech knows his stuff, they recognise me aswell, it's great, they even let me and four friends chill out on their couch while I noodled on a guitar, only to end up buying a set of guitar strings.

^ That is what I like in a guitar store. If I want a big company atmosphere and reception I'll order online. Which I do often.

Oh, and I love how they use the term "Speciallist" <- ... lol

the real culprits here are sounds great, virtually the only place in the uk you can try a soldano. except you can't. the don' list the prices either, so you email them and say how much does this cost with x y and z mods, just want to know what to aim for, they don't even reply.

YES! You just made me remember another story of mine.

So I walk in and the guy asks me what I'm looking for, I say Mesa Dual Rectifier. He says, ok cool, not my favorite amp, but cool. I say why do you say that? He says it's overpriced and it has no tone. I said really? Then I told him to get me an instrument cable   Anyway, he brought it over and I plugged in and after I warmed it up a bit I put it on CH3 Modern and fixed the EQ for godsakes. When i got there it was EQ'd like a goddamn Spider III. Gain was on 10, bass 10, mids 0, treb 8 and I was like omg facepalm. So I put the gain on about 7, bass at, 3, mids at 5-6, treb at 7 and rolled the output knob all the way up then adjusted the channel volume so that it wasn't buzzy. I started playing Mastodon and some original riffs and his jaw hit the floor. He says, Dude you rock! I've never heard that amp sound so good! Rather than be a dick, I just laughed and said yeah, it's a hard amp to dial.

After all, that is reasonable. Most people can't dial the damn thing. It's still a funny story :D
