Guthrie Govan!

Okay, Sebby, present your argument and defend your God.

Let me step in and explain it for you.

please use the criteria above
:D

Okay, just what constitutes Guitar God status?

Lets look at the criteria for Sainthood as a model:

A person must be righteous and virtuous. (tone/musical technical ability/stage presence/others?)

Well, Guthrie is right on and a virtuoso

The person must be from that particular religion. (Music style)
He hails from the halls of guitar shreddum of many scriptures. The books of speed, dexterity, taste and style. King Jimi version of course. :gethim:

Some religions require that the person has to have passed away and attained a place in heaven before they can be considered for Sainthood. Others acknowledge Sainthood as a state that can be achieved while a person is living too. (can guitar God status be established by mere mortals while living? make your argument
My argument??? Did you watch the video???

The person needs to have performed miracles while living and or after death. (levitated on stage/been able to have made over a million dollars post 2000 in personal wealth despite peer to peer file sharing/etc)
Miracles, did you watch the video???
Guthrie does one better, he does it for free!!! :D

The person needs to be able to intercede with God on behalf of people. (either have sold their souls to the devil or acquired the Pick of Destiny - evidence required

When Guthrie plays, he speaks for me with Angels tapping out 3 part harmonies in the background!!! :D

certainly he's very talented, and for you he "touches" you in a way thats inexplicable. its not my place to say he is or isn't, but I believe that gods inspire the masses, with one note, they can conjure magic that makes women throw their finest panties over the heads of god fearing folks. Buckethead for example, he's a machine, he has moments of sheer genius, but I ain't seen nar one set of panties soaring towards him from the fans. Same for Paul Gilbert, panti-less. Again, thats just me. Robert Johnson, lots of panties. Brian May, certainly has some panties, Nuno, probably not so much. Am having fun here, but in there, am being serious to.
What about the panty king? Tom Fucking Jones!!!

you guys are all missing the most obvious one

Gandhi made his vintage 40's
micheal angelo painted his guitars ( not the guitar noob, the painter)
tony blair strung his guitar
his guitars are made out of Chinese ancient oak

he is our GOD

john P

this is a good one too

Put Yngwie, Paul, Vai, EVH & Petrucci in the same room and you got all the bases covered!!! :worship: :rawk: :worship:

I agree. His guitar is recognizable by non guitar players. He has sold close to 100 million in albums. His music appeals to the masses in comparison to previously mentioned. As far as looks, he does not look as good as Vai, but closer to the lady who played in "Throw Momma from the Train". Would that disqualify him ?

Chet Atkins and Piggy from Voivod.

I'm not gonna get into all the philosophical reasons.

did someone give off the thought that girls do not "throw panties" for NUNO? without trying to sound gay Nuno is probably one of the best looking men in the world to pick up a guitar, and women love him plenty. but back to the actual question....guitar god..? i dunno thats a tough call.

well the whole point of becoming a "guitar god" is to master your technique on the instrument and hone (sp?) your abilities to the best of your abilities - but do so subconciously (unless your yngwie or john mayer)

but a single "guitar god" is comparing that mastered affect of each individual person - its actually impossible because of so many genre differences in music. music is the only language that is universal - its impossible to have 1 person over all areas - they are each a master at what they do and what they do well. you will notice each person posting who they think is the best due to the genres they correlate themselves with

so the question is undefined/divide by zero

Bearing in mind that playing guitar is not a sport, I think what makes a Guitar God is someone who has consistently demonstrated a unique style that is highly sought after for duplication by fans and other guitar players alike.

Mike McKenzie of The Red Chord said it best:

It doesn't matter if you can shred circles around a John Petrucci/Al Di Meola mutant hybrid guitar beast. If you can't write a good song, who cares?"

I got permabanned from HCAF for basically defending the notion that just because Adam Dutkiewicz isn't THE best, it doesn't mean he sucks.

VAI, Petrucci, Dimebag, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Clapton, Angus, EVH, Lynch, Martini, SRV, Yngwie

=GUITAR GODS = Mucho Panties   :D

Govan is amazing but not a God yet.

And what's up with his tone in that 1st video  :bleh:

Beck is on a completely different level than Guitar God, IMO.

Whereas most "guitar gods" have long since been imitated by dedicated players with some degree of accuracy, I cannot say I've ever come across someone who could even remotely imitate what Beck does. If there were a level higher than "God" conceptually (besides Chuck Norris), Beck would be it.

Would you rate him higher than a Robert Johnson or Jimi Hendrix?

IMO a "Guitar God" needs a number of things... (at least in the traditional sense)

- Innovative and inspiring playing (not necessarily the most technical player in the world)
- Uniqueness
- Unattainability
- Mystery ("I heard he paid $5m for a sculpture of Maria Magdalene, made from diamonds and tigers tears," etc...)
- Good, but slightly weird, looks
- Extremely low BMI
- Broken soul factor
- Speaks in a low, and quiet voice... and not very much. And when he does... you never quite understand it
- Lives or owns a castle in Ireland
- and finally... Too many thin Arabic inspired scarves.

And the winner is... I dont know, but Jimmy Page seems to fit the bill.
