I'm looking for a good and trustworthy tech to take my guitar to. The dude at Sam Ash Clearwater did not do a good job and I brought the guitar back to him 2 times to fix his mistakes (pickup wiring and locking tuners). Well the guitar is still not wired up the way I asked and has a really annoying problem with going out of tune on the g and b strings. I didn't have the tuning issue before I brought the guitar in. It's an RGA 121 by the way and I put a crunchlab/liquifire and schaller locking tuners on it. Who should I go to in FL or who should I ship my guitar to. I just want the thing to be playable at this point. Didn't know that was so hard to ask. Anyways let me know !

Ben Chafin. Ben is a really nice guy and does great work. Ben was a custom builder at Dean (and many others) and now has his own custom shop. He was working out of Legends Guitars on Hillsborough until they closed this year. Contact him at one of these websites to find out where his current shop is located.

Ben and Mick Donner opened up near Benjamin road.

Yep. Ben's the best.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I'll bring my guitar over there asap.

My vote is Borgy at the Sarasota Sam Ash. The guy will make your guitar play like butter.

FWIW, not bashing, just relating my experience:

I took my GMW Jake to Ben at Legends a few years ago for a setup and neck adjustment. He had it for quite awhile and when I picked it up told me, well its a single action truss rod so I did what I could, you'll just have to live with whatever the neck wants to do. It was ok, but still wasn't right.
Took the guitar to Borgy and after like 10 seconds of looking at it he says, well first of all, this thing needs a fret level and dressing in addition to the neck adjustment. Anyways, the guitar has played freaking sick ever since, the frets were super smooth and I haven't had any problems with it since.

I own in excess of 100 guitars. Ben has worked on every one and can make world class guitar from wood slabs. And Mick Donner was one of the head designers of the Wolfgang.

Great guys, and won't upsell you.

As a fellow Luthier, and friend, I could not recommend any one higher than Mark (Borgy) at S A R A S O T A Sam Ash. Expert Luthier, Craftsman, Finisher, Jammer, and all 'round great guy. He WILL treat you right, and his level of expertise is near impossible to meet! Tell him "BeaTkle Geo" sent you, and tell him hi for me. I just re-fitted a set of Locking Tuners yesterday to a customers RG, and it is NOT a big issue. drill out (24/64"/10mm), re-drill for mounting screws, touch-up ream, and you're down the road. Gb bg PS: 941-351-7793

First off, odd necro-bump.....anyways, agreed Borgy is/was awesome but he left at least a couple of years ago and Sam Ash replaced him - I had the new guy do some work for me about a year and a half ago- can't remember his name now but he said he used to work for Dean. Is Borgy back?

Very sorry to hear that Borgy's not there any more. He NEEDED his own LARGER facility, even bigger than the airport thing he was renting back then, (1997?). Haven't been in touch, MY BAD!! Sure hope he is doing well, Great Guy, Great Friend, in touch, or no!

Ben just might not have thought that you didn't want to go the extra $$$ which is what would have happened with a Levelling, and re-crown? But that option should have been put forward to you, (IMHO). Ten-to-one, without seeing your instrument, Borgy "Levelled-Out" a possible neck TWIST. If it was a one piece neck, they are known for it, that's why on all guitars I build, the necks are MINIMUM 3 piece, with grain opposed. Borgy's Da Man!!
