hey guitarman967 ,
did you carry out the mod that peter was going to email you ?
if so , how does it sound - did it get rid of some of the compression ?
:rawk:

Have you tried a bigger tube?......I run a Groove Tube Goldlion KT66 and it takes alot of the compression off and opens the amp up alot. The clean channel sounds killer and channel 4 sounds massive.

which position do you run this in , and how does it affect the gain on channel 2 ( more or less ? ) ?

No, in the end I didn't do the mod simply because that compression is part of the Diezel signature. I have other amps for an uncompressed sound like my Framus Dragon and Cobra. I really think that either you love that sound or you don't. I happen to feel it's really unique and luckily I have other amps for different sounds when I need them.

I've found that I could get the sound I wanted by turning the Gain down as low as possible and boosting the input with an OD pedal set as a Input boost.
The VH4's controls are very sensitive to slight changes as well, so, I think the key is in making very small adjustments.
If the controls are turned too quickly you can actually miss alot of sounds I've found.

He made a powertube suggestion :)

For dynamic rythm rock'n'roll sounds I use Ch2, it has an huge dynamic. It's the channel I use most of the time.
Ch3 is reserved for more modern sounds, for little bit more "metal" riffs, so yes it is compessed but it sound AWESOME !!

i did think that , but he said " i run a groove tube kt66"... which implies he uses just one tube

i totally agree - so far channel 2 is my absolute favorite .
i'm also getting some great sounds from channel 4 , with the gain at 7 o'clock - although i have a mullard 12AT7 , which i've used in my einstein to lower the gain with great effect , that i may try in V2 .

i would like a little more gain on channel 2 though - anyone achieved this with tube swaps ?
And if so , which position did you put it in , and how did this affect the other channels ?

A preamp tube will be 12AX7 or AT7 and less common 12AU7.
KT-66 or KT-88's are always powertubes as are 6L6's and EL-34 and their variants 5881, 6CA7, KT-77, ETC... :D
It's just easier to think of the Pre's as AX7's and you're set
