You have an 85 at the bridge? What do you think about it? I have a cheapy import Dinky that I'm going to do something with here shortly and was scouting pickup options for something I didn't already have. I have no EMG's thus far.

Right on  I personally think the 85 sounds better in the bridge and the 81 sounds better in the neck.

not really, everything in my rig except my speaker cab & Titan, was either built or modded by him, 2 guitars, pedals, this Marshall.....

I always tell people he's a poor John Suhr.....  if he had the cash, he'd probably be designing all kinds of shit, amps, pedals, guitars, etc.... Just needs the funding to do it right. He's working on getting a patent for a new bolt-on design, and gonna have them done on CNC, so he can ramp up production, then keep the neck-thrus all Custom.

85 is my favorite, the 81 just seems to have way too much high end for me, the 85 is a bit warmer, but still aggressive as hell.

Cool! Good to see some talent getting put to good use.

So, pardon my noobery, but would you compare the 85 to a really high output PAF or a Duncan Jazz or something like that?

I couldn't... honestly dont know/remember alot about either of those, been so long since I've played them. maybe someone else can chime in. LDM (aka Phatgirl) could probably answer this as well, she's an EMG85 user too.

I guess what I'm getting at is how organic those pickups sound. I know they're high output, active pickups, but do they still maintain a bit of that passive flavor? One of my biggest complaints with some of the DiMarzio stuff is that when put into a trem guitar it sounds like....a machine. There's no warmth....just balls to the wall power, which is OK in some cases, but not if you want something super flexible.

How does the 85 act in mid to low gain settings?

  another thing I don't usually do... I know, I know, but for guitar, I'm strictly a Metal player..... for everything else I stick with bass. so again, I'm of no use to ya.   sorry.

Here's my deal with them, they have that extra little push I like and can't get out of passives, I've tried quite a few different passives, Duncans, BL, Dimarzio, BK, etc... and haven't found anything that I like more than my 85s. I do want to try a Duncan Alternative 8, Suhr Aldrich, and possibly a couple other boutique pick-ups, but when it's all said and done, I like my EMGs, always have, hate having to use a boost all the time to get passives where I want them, and the EMGs have that extra little boost I like. especially running them at 18v.

hope it helps at least a little. sorry I couldn't help more specifically to you question though.

Sounds awesome Jug.
Really aggressive in the mids without being spiky.
Nice tight lows as well.
