oh yeah...

I go through phases where I'll start playing my strats and G & L legacy's.

However not too long ago, I went back into my recorded stuff and listened to some stuff I've recorded with various bands over the years both live and in studio and was looking at my stage notes, etc. Most every time where I was like "damn, that sounded real good" I looked and it was a Les Paul.
(we're talking the better part of 20 years of stuff recorded on an old Fostex 4 track in the beginning to the CPU based stuff I have today...through 80's rack stuff to Marshalls, VHT's, Budda's, Boogies, etc)

I know they're not the be-all end all of guitars, and I do enjoy my strats for certain things...however...If I can only have 1 guitar for the rest of my life...It's going to be a Les Paul Custom

Ya know, I played Strat type guitars all my life and never really even owned an LP until a few years ago. I got one just so I could say I have an LP in my home studio. Well, I had to have my EBMM Steve Morse set up and it took my repair guy a few weeks to get a new bridge for it (worn out bridge). Anyway, while it was in the shop I found myself playing the LP a lot over that two week period. I don't know, now, I really dig the LP, so much so, I bought another one. Both the LPs are now my go to guitars of choice in the studio...I love that big fat sound!!!

I started on strats and consider myself a strat guy. However I have been getting into Les Paul's recently. I have had an LP studio for about 10 years. I now have 3 LP's. I was hoping to dump one, but just can't at this point.

I am amazed at how different the 3 LP's sound. The LP custom is super thick, agressive, and chunky, sometimes its too thick. The LP studio is bright, warm, round and chimey. The LP standard I have seems to be the comprimise between the two...

I have a 93-94 LP standard that just KILLS. It also has the same microscopic action that my superstrats have! Ive always had a love hate relationship with the LP's because some of them feel right and others not so good IMHO. With that said, if you get a good one, they are pretty tough to beat for balls out tone and feel. I didn;t let anyone try the guitar for a long time because it needed a new nut but now Ive got the sucker back in shape and it KILLS.
You need to try mine Dan!!

Yup!! I took it out Just for show because the nut was screwed and it didn't play very well. My friend Sal put on a new nut and tuners and the thing KILLS now!!

Les Pauls are almost too easy to play somtimes to me, they spoil you and make you soft if that's all you play imo...

Sometimes when you play a guitar that fights you back a little, makes you work a little harder to wring those notes out, that extra effort comes through and adds a little extra magic to the music.

You guys know I'm a big fan of Les Pauls. I love the way they look, the way they play, the way they feel balanced when you play them live, etc... But most importantly (of course), the tone. These guitars have spoiled me to the point that NO OTHER GUITAR I've ever owned sounded as good. I mean, others sound great, but not with the authority of the Les Pauls I've owned.

With that said, buying this R8 was the best move I've ever made. They're not cheap, but man, the tone and construction on this thing is second to none. I'm a firm believer in the Custom Shop Historic models now. They're lighter (better quality wood), they resonate more (once piece mahogany back and neck), and feel fan-freaking-tastic in my hands.

I've never in my life owned a guitar that I'd say would be with me forever, but I am saying that about this R8. It's my #1 axe and totally beats any other guitar I've ever played. I still whip out the K-Line or Tele at gigs (and sometimes play them the entire night), but that's just for variety. As soon as I strap on the R8, I feel like I'm home again.

If you get a Good LP it can spoil you. I am constently amazed by my LP because it sound and plays so good. I also have to say that my LP isn't like the old 70's ones where they literally broke your back. Mine is definitely on the lighter side but sustains like a bitch. I also know that I have the wrong pickups in it (I swapped out the original for some PRS Dragons) The dragons sound killer but the guitar lost some Mojo by me installing them lol

10's on the 'Paul and Edwards LPC, 10's on the Tele and Strat, 7 string 10-60 sets on the baritone extended scale 7 strings.

Does gibson still make a paul that isn't weight relieved? I may have missed it if someone mentioned it in this thread but I've played a lot of current production pauls and it seems like compared to the heavy cinderblock versions of old, these weight relieved models also feature a little tone relief as well.

I have one that was made in 93 and Im not sure if it was weight relieved or not but it is definitely not as heavy as the older LP's but it sounds killer. I have found that I prefer the 93-94 LP's and those are the only ones that I would buy.

yeah there's a local les paul nut in town that swears by the late 80's and early~mid 90's models. He said he's never played one past the mid 90's models that he liked...not even the 58 re-issue.

I agree with him 100%
I love the late 80's LP's as well but I found it easier to get the early 90's LP's, so I kind of stuck by that. The magic year/s for me were 93 and 94. I could go in any store at that time and find a killer sounding and playing LP! After about 95 and on I found the quality went down again.
There is a shop in NYC called Matt humanov guitars and the guy is known throughout the industry to be a hard ass when it comes to accepting guitars. This guy will not acept a lemon guitar and he kicks them back to the MFG if any guitar comes in jacked lol! The guy at the shop was the one who turned me onto the 93's-4's. I bought my LP from them in 93-4 and Im happy I did!!
