our local boutique store is like that too. They'll send back every single guitar if they have to.

then again, with meloncon, Surh, anderson and american Hamers on the wall, few of them actually find their way back to the maker. They did drop the entire USA line of PRS's though...

Sounds like My kind of store!!!

Every new-off-the-shelf LP that I've played has sounded really good. The exceptional ones have ALWAYS been Goldtops. I don't know why...

yeah there's a local les paul nut in town that swears by the late 80's and early~mid 90's models. He said he's never played one past the mid 90's models that he liked...not even the 58 re-issue.

I agree with him 100%
I love the late 80's LP's as well but I found it easier to get the early 90's LP's, so I kind of stuck by that. The magic year/s for me was 93 and 94. I could go in any store at that time and find a killer sounding and playing LP! After about 95 and on I found the quality went down again.
There is a shop in NYC called Matt humanov guitars and the guy is known throughout the industry to be a hard ass when it comes to accepting guitars. This guy will not acept a lemon guitar and he kicks them back to the MFG if any guitar comes in jacked lol! The guy at the shop was the one who turned me onto the 93's-4's. I bought my LP from them in 93-4 and Im happy I did!!

all the best!!

I agree as my favorite years for Les Paul Standards are 87 through 93 (never played a 94 so it may be in there too). The neck shape, sound and feel are what I like. I prefer them over Historics. Only thing is the sunburst colors during these years are usually ugly.

yeah it's a nice place

Diezel
2 rock
Bogner
Orange
/13
Fuchs
Bad cat
Budda
Carr
65
Dr. Z

etc..

Plus any mom and pop hand built amps they can find and slap a sky high price tag on. :aww:

Drew!! You are so on the money!! My Les Paul sunburst is ugly as hell but it sounds killer!! I hated the fact of how bad the top and pant was but I had to go with tone first!!!

That's why my main Les Paul (an '89 Standard) is black.

I really wanted a Black LP but they didn't have one at the time. I hand picked my LP with a buddy of mine after playing 12 LP's lol. The one I wound up with had the tone and feel that I wanted. I started out looking for LP customs but I couldn't find one I like, so I settled on the Standard and Im happy I did

One cool thing about it is that it was the 1958 Gibson Les Paul example model for 2003 and was on Gibson's trailer and at NAMM. A lot of people played my guitar from around the country. ;)

alot of people played with my ex-wife but that's not something i'm proud of. :D

I'm not really aware of any major construction differences from the early '80s through a few years ago. I believe they all had the weight relief swiss cheese holes and stuff. The headstock would vary in size and the tuners and stuff were different, but were there any other differences?

FWIW, I've owned a '71 LP Custom, an '85/86 LP Studio, an early '90s LP Studio, an '01 LP Standard, an '01/02 LP Custom, and this '06 R8 and they've all rocked!

The best seemed to be the early '90s LP Studio and my R8, but I don't know why.

I'm not sure about that '93-'94 theory. My '96 Standard is heavier than any of my friends' L.P.s. I've compared it against 5 or 6 from before and after the early '90s....and it's always a laugh how f*cking heavy my Standard is.

PS> Like others have said, it's the BEST sounding guitar!

I have a traditional. I like it better than the standard and R8 that I had. Seems like they're trying to step up QC. Mine is around 9lbs. I wasn't sure I would like the 57 classic pickups as I didn't think they would be hot enough but they sound great in this guitar. Mine has a nice flame as well. I'm definitely interested in checking out one of the 08 standards also...

You forgot the '73 LP custom :poke:

was your '90's LP studio the red one that had been really well played? The one I am thinking of had the paint sanded off the neck.

It funny that you say your LP's just feel 'right' when you play them. That is the same way I feel about my strats. I guess its hard to teach a fender guy new tricks.

And i bet Gibson just sends out those Lemons to the next store or your local GC who won't bother to give them a once over.

I have 3 Gibsons. One 1972 Custom in wine red with a bigsby. A new Les Paul Jr witha single P90 it rocks. Also have a ES339 in red which also rocks but does clean real well and if I could play any better would do jazz I'm sure.

whenever I play my Les paul for awhile all of my guitars sound tiny by comparison...

I have an older standard that weighs about 20 lbs!!!

Hey Dan. There's a HCAF gathering in August. I think some of us are going to go. I beleive it's in Edison. Let me know if you want to go since i drive past your way and you could jump in with me.

I'll let you know next week when I have some idea of what I have going on. Thanks for the invite!!!

In this new band Im in Ive been playing my Edwards LP exclusively. The upper fret access is still hard for me since I have small hands but man the tone is glorious.

Its cool not having the patch the channels on my Superbass too. Just plug straight in, crank Volume 1, and rock.

When I was at Southpaw Guitars I played a lefty VOS that played terribly. Then I picked up a Standard and a regular Custom Black Beauty that played really well.
