Another 52 year-old, Ed?

Geez, how many of us are 52? Crazy, man. :D

An hour a day is heaps, man. I've only ever been able to play for short bursts, like a few minutes at a time... if I'm lucky, which I am.

I'm very happy that you were able to resolve your issues with hand soreness/stiff feeling. I have De Quervain's tenosynovitis (tendonitis of the thumb)
Whoa! I just read up on this. Thanks for mentioning this. Sounds like my symptoms exactly. Also, I just tried the test they recommend- Yep, ouch that hurts.

Yeah, tendonitis sux.

Been fighting it for almost 40 years - in my shoulders, arms, fingers, toes... ridiculous.

For some peeps, colloidal minerals help. I've seen classic cases of tennis elbow disappear almost overnight after CM supplementation. Just be aware that some companies cheat by using sulphur to extract the minerals (usually from "old", buried organic plant matter), instead of relying only on soaking in water. You can tell who the culprits are by taking a whiff from the bottle's opening immediately after breaking the seal. If you smell sulphur, it ain't kosher.

I mention this 'cause inorganic sulphur's a common cause of long-term backache. Peeps don't realise it, but the shit builds slowly in your system, accumulating from food sources that otherwise shouldn't contain any. Just as in the case I mentioned above, it serves as a means of speeding up processes, such as the drying one. This is why dry dog "cubes" are a classic source of them. When I detox (heal sick ones) dogs, green puss oozes from their eyes within a week or two. This is the sulphur finding its way out. In the case of humans, you can take MSM, which IIRC is extracted from pine bark; it's an organic form of sulphur, which is good for you, and as is usually the case when you replace an inorganic (from rocks or made in a lab) form of something with an organic (plant-based) one, the bad form is "forced" out. In this case, back-pain relief in cases where folks have given up after decades.

About 2 years ago I switched from 10s on std tuned Strats to 9s. 9.5s on Eb tuned Strats. 9.5s on std tuned LPs, and 10s on Eb tuned LPs.

56 this month. My hands actually feel better than a few years ago.

I switch from 11's to 10.5's

From what I can tell via first hand experience, as we age eating we'll (good nutrition), limiting alcohol, getting good sleep, staying hydrated, and cardio is more important that ever.

I cycle 25 miles twice a week, I feel 20 years younger afterwards.

Testify, brother.

IMHO the cardio component can be omitted as long as the others aren't. I say this for the benefit of those who're too-old, unable or aren't motivated-enough to go down that road (see what I did there?).

I can see being disabled a limiting factor. But the unmotivated c'mon, you have to make it fun. I love to bike, i don't think of it as a chore, but as an adventure I look forward to. I know most don't feel that way because I literally have to force others to do it, haha!

My hands got so bad about a year ago I thought I was going to have to stop playing.

Glucosamine Chondroitin once a day fixed me. Available at any drug store.

This shit is amazing.

Hey, there'll always be lazy folk and that's why I've tailored my "health advice" accordingly. What tends to happen of course is that once peeps have implemented the other elements for a while, energy / motivation to do something returns.
