I've been working with an old man for a few years and he's dying of cancer. He's a vet who served deep in the shit in the Korean war - a war my late father fought in. He goes to chemotherapy every weekend, and he's in such bad shape now that he now looks like a Jewish prisoner at a concentration camp. The cancer has eaten away at him so viciously. He's a teacher at an inner-city alternative school and goes to work every single day, never missing a day. He works with shitty kids who are criminals, among the worst of the worst, who insult and berate him daily, "Fuck you old whitey." they say, but nothing stops him from trying to reach a few of them. I have HUGE respect for the man, but things aren't looking good. It's very sad. He is a real hero... one of the few real distinguished heroes I've ever met. That's a man who deserves the honor of Veterans Day.
