Has anyone tried a 5751 in the V1 socket of a Modern Classic

I'm going to put all new valves (pre and power) in my MC and have the bias adjusted. Rick told me to use JJ ECC803's which I think will work well as she is pretty bright. I also have more gain and saturation than I will ever need. In essence, I have plenty to spare. I'm wondering if the lower gain 5751 in the V1 will keep her a bit more quiet at idle and allow me to open the master up a bit.

Any thoughts?

Couldn't hurt. Try it out. Find a NOS instead of the currently manufactured ones. It's worked for me in a number of different amps.

Have not tried. It will obviously lower your gain on both channels. If you play clean to mid gain it might work well. Wizards are picky though about the preamp tubes with regard to noise. Great amps. My favorite amp of any I have played or owned is an MTL.

I like those 803's you are using now...but I have heard that there is a new JJ preamp tube for lower gain you may want to try. I'm interested in what your tech biased the amp at? Rick adjustment to the bias for the E34L's is crazy at 47+ MA of current draw per tube. I bring it down to around 30-32 MA per tube and it quiets things down considerably.

The MCII I got brand new came at 32ma from Rick.

yeah, that sounds about right. At first I thought maybe the amp was thrown about during shipping and it altered the bias but when the second amp I sent to him for the upgrades was set to the same numbers I knew it was him..lol One of my amps was purchased from a guy on this forum who never took it out of the plastic! that one was set in the 40's as well. So maybe he changed his approach lately.

One thing I definitely noticed when comparing the older MC I had to the MCII is that the older amp was much harder on the power tubes regardless of bias. I remember how some commented on how the amp really cooked the power tubes. On another note the MCII was definitely a little tamer. Right now I have just the MTL and for my tastes it's the perfect high gain Marshall inspired head. I was told Rick will not really be building many more of them if at all. He said it's very close in sonic territory to the MCII and I think the MTL is a harder build for him, hence the higher cost of the MTL.

My MCII direct from Rick was at about 40mA. I dialed that back to 35mA.

It was hot as hell when I got it. The guy I bought it from had Winged C's in there. I think mine is an early to mid 2000's build. I didn't ask the tech brought it down to 32ma. There is a guy here in the city that has an MC and said he thinks the amp is unlike most modded Marshall's. I think he keeps his biased pretty hot. I'm gonna try a new tech this week that has a shop closer to me and ask him to get it down to that range.

I think I'll get a pair of 5751's for the V1 and PI just to see how I like it. I can always try them in my XTC if they don't respond well in the MC. Again, I never turn the gain past 2.5 while plugged into the hi input so I have plenty to spare. If anything I'm guessing the amp will respond as if it's in the Lo input but a little hotter. I'll report my findings.

Sounds good... let us know how it turns out with those tubes.
