Rules of Conduct on TGP
Revised on August 24, 2010

GENERAL RULES PHILOSOPHY: Before reading this, please read the Terms of Use agreement, which covers some things that are not covered here. Basically, we expect you to be courteous to others and to know the rules BEFORE you post. In addition, we figured out that we can't write rules as fast as people try to find ways around them. For that reason, the rules are written as simplistically as we can and you are asked to observe the spirit of the rules.

This is a privately owned website. We have the right to end your membership for any reason, and there is no "fair" or "unfair" about it. To put it bluntly, if you become a pain for us, we're not going to let you stick around. The job of moderating is too difficult to spend precious time trying to please a few people who can't/won't be happy with the way things are here. Some decisions ARE subjective, so the best way of remaining a member here is to not test the boundaries. If you choose to go to the edge of a boundary, you have only yourself to blame if we push you over the cliff!

A philosophical point that needs to be made falls under the "live and let live" concept. Some people are drawn like moths to fire to certain threads and end up arguing about the subject. If the topic is not against our rules, don't go barging into the thread to tell people how wrong they are to........well, whatever it is that they did that you didn't have to get upset about if you had just not opened the thread. A lot of arguments would be avoided if you stay away from things that happen to push your buttons. This is much easier than contacting us to tell us to make even more restrictions on what can be posted!

All moderator decision are final. Arguing with moderators will probably result in an end to your membership. With this many members, we just don't have the time to debate things. Just as a point of interest, less than 5% of our membership have ever received an infraction (see announcement titled "Understanding Our Infraction System") and far less than 1% of members have ever been banned. If over 95% of folks can exist and post here without getting an infraction, so can you!

If you believe that there has been a serious violation of our rules, there is an icon in the upper right hand side of every post (looks like a yield sign) that allows you to report that post. We do not have the manpower or time to read the more than 7000 new posts that are done every day on this website, so we depend on members to report posts that are significant violations of our rules. If the bold/italics words in this paragraph aren't obvious enough, please don't report minor issues or use the "reported posts" function simply because you don't like someone. In plain language, here are the rules.........

THE BASICS (General)
1. Don't antagonize or be rude to other members in your posts, PMs or emails. Being sarcastically rude is still being rude.
2. No obscene language, bigoted comments, illegal stuff, defaming, or copyright/trademark violations allowed.
3. No political or religious stuff in your posts or signatures. Anti-political or anti-religious stuff is also a no-no!
4. No “deals gone bad" posts. If you are screwed in some major way in an emporium deal, contact an administrator and we'll look into it, but we are not responsible for deals made. We DO ban people when we believe that they are ripping off other members.
5. Only one user account per member. If you are suspended and we catch you opening another user account during your suspension, you will be banned.
6. No shilling or spamming. Builders and dealers must confine their selling or discussions of their products to the Builders & Retailers emporium or the Builders and Retailers forum.
7. No posting of private communications or personal info of other people.
8. No arguing with moderators. Their decisions are final.
9. Builders and retailers may not say negative things about their competitors or competing products.
10. No excessive arguing or thread hijacking. If you haven't convinced someone in 1 or 2 posts, just let it go and don't beat it into the ground. Don't change the thread topic (hijacking). You can easily start your own thread.
11. No trolling, also known as attention-seeking, allowed. If we feel that you started something just for the attention or to cause problems, you violated this rule.
12. If you leave TGP or are banned, DO NOT ask us to delete your posts or your user account. You made the choice to register and we don't have the time to delete your account just because you don't want to be on TGP anymore. Per our Terms of Use, the loose translation is "we own your words" once you post them.

THE BASICS (Emporiums)
13. Only Supporting Members can post ads.
14. Buyer and seller beware! TGP is not responsible. Use commonsense when engaging in deals with people you don't know. Get full descriptions, photos, keep copies of all communications, talk to the person on the phone and, if your gut tells you that something doesn't feel right, don't do the deal.
15. We allow up to 4 ads per person in each emporium area at any one time.
16. One bump or comment per day in your ad is allowed. Use it wisely and respond to other questions via PM.
17. You must post a price or specifically what you want in trade in your ad. No fishing with ads that say something like "Will trade xxxx. What do you have?"
18. No negative comments allowed about someone's pricing or gear. If you think that the price is too high, move on and don't buy.
19. Only music gear can be posted for sale or trade.
20. Builders, dealers or “hobbyist for profit” ads must be in the Builders & Retailers emporium.
21. No auction ads unless item is on Ebay. Put “FA:”, “On Ebay” or “For Auction” in title of ad.
22. Do not post items for sale on behalf of non-supporting members. The supporting memberships are how we pay for the costs of the site.
23. Only one ad (make sure that it's the correct emporium!) per item being sold. Don't post the same item more than once or in more than one emporium area.

SUMMARY: Your membership to TGP is a privilege, not a right. If you don’t agree with the rules, you should find a discussion site that better meets your expectations. Although we value every member and want you to be here, if your membership causes us trouble, we may choose to suspend or ban you. We reserve the right to suspend or ban any member for any reason, not limited to the above rules.

Wow, I better not post there anymore because I have a weird sarcastic style of humor, I use the emporium alot so I dont want to get banned.

I think these guys really need to clean the sand off their clits.
They treat that place like some kind of wanna-be Holy Land.
If you don't believe what they believe, you're simply going to hell
Unless Tag approves your tone and playing of course.
One big circle jerk over there

I don't like any site, club or other person or group of people that try to regulate other people's behaviour beyond the minimum required by law (and even that...), or that try to outlaw other people's interests or actions based on their own limited closed-minded views. People who try to be king of their little pathetic hill... Most people are not fit to have power over others.

Besides, offense is the problem of the offended... :D

Yep, an asshole like you will be banned, probably a month after I am

This place is cool. Way better than HC. Want to keep it that way. I have spent a few extra thousand dollars this year just from the internet forum generated GAS, and for that I am greatful...

I can see what you guys are saying, but I also feel that if I'm "throwing the party" and somebody rubs me the wrong way I should be able to boot them out whether they "broke a law" or not. If I don't like you, I don't want you around...period. Go start your own party.

Tough call...glad I don't have my own board ;)

"SUMMARY: Your membership on TGP is a privilage, not a right"

Well fuck me sideways.

Really though, does seem a bit stupid. We have few issues on Rig-Talk, and Brad's very reasonable with his laid back approach, I believe if he thought someoned -needed- to be banned, he would ban them, strict regulations on online discussion forums are like regulating converstion in a bar in a way.

As immature as it is. Part of me wants to make an account there deliberately to get banned and see how serious they are about their new regulations.

Dont even bother they will smack you down and delete your posts real quick. It's a great forum for the emporium and useful information.

I do think the tightening of the rules will cause a lot of the knowledgable people to leave, a lot of that forum has recently become "why do you need a r9, 4x12 or a 100 watts, the Epiphone and 10 watt Line6 Spider sound just as good?"

Oy...
I have a TGP account. It's neither informative nor entertaining... thus I don't go there. I think I've been there a total of 10 times in 7-8 years.

That forum seems as lame as HCAF, but in a totally different way. I haven't posted at either one in forever.

Oh I won't. Seems trollish.

I've considered getting an acount there, I've read a few threads from time to time that I found while googling stuff, but never saw enough that made me want to stay or anything.

Anyway, I'm a laid back personal generally and this forum suits that. Sorry guys, I'm staying for a while. :D

Yeah it's a polar opposite kind of lameness... LOL! :D

I know I got a warning a few months ago for referencing congress when someone mentioned people being stupid. Just an oblique, humorous (I thought) note.

I just have to remember that TGP is like a library, behave and you'll get what you want. Misbehave and you'll get what you were looking for.

I used to like TGP for it's diversity of knowledge... seemed like you could ask about pretty much anything and someone there had detailed information on the subject.

That diversity seems to have died off over the last couple of years in favour of the ultimate-bedroom-rig-of-the-weak mentality that seems to have taken over.

Honestly, who gives a fuck. It's a privately owned forum and like they say if you don't like it go somewhere else. If you think about reasonable human behavior you're not going to break any of their rules anyway. I could do with less pussy/anonymous, antagonistic fucktards on these forums anyway. Rig-talk has been my fav for a while but I do enjoy TGP as well when I want to stop hearing about someone's ass fetish or why a certain party or politician is satan

I wish people in general would be less assuming and more congenial with people on a forum. Basic good manners I guess. Pretend you're actually talking in person

It really comes down to RT has more discussions about gear I'm interested in than TGP. Plus I can say pussy fucktard and how much I would like to nail Katy Perry on RT.

Wow that sounds like a fun place to hang out, I might have to leave RT and go there *sniffs cork, pulls up g-string nice and tight (for comfortablility) , and pops in Robben Ford CD*

TGP is the kinda place that if you could, you'd walk into dressed like Barack Obama smoking a spliff.

TGP will be TGP. Its a different vibe than this place. A little stuffy in there   Those rules dont mean shit though. Certain people will get away with murder and certain people will get away with shit in certain situations.

Yep, that's true. I imagine I'm one of those people who gets away with more than others, although in all fairness, I've been there 7 years now, and I've contributed as much as anyone, I believe. That's not just to say advice/tutorial wise, but monetarily, too.

For a long time the TGP was funded by donations. When it was broken down, though, less than 3% of the total membership had ever donated, and less than 10% of those 3% ever donated more than $20-30 in their whole time there. Or in other words, a very few were paying for all. The internet is not free, gents, someone has to pay the server bill.

I came up with the idea of the donating gear via a raffle about 5 years ago. The first one was by Jim Wagner for a set of WCR pickups, and they charged $5 I believe for a raffle ticket. Then I did one for a pair of speakers, other manufacturers followed later, but for the first two years it was mostly Wags & I. They did so well that the server fees were paid for a long time, but as the TGP membership grew, server fees became $10k per year. That was when they had around 15,000 members. They have over 60,000 members now, do the math.

As one poster commented, he does a lot of business over there. A full year membership to sell there is $12 per year, I think, so it's not much $$ to get a pretty decent buyer pool. Around 18 months ago the members selling for free with no other posts but to sell (no input) was determined to be a huge number of sellers not contributing to the site, so they initiated fees for selling. That was fair as far as I was concerned, I know I'd been donating because it was the right thing to do to keep the site up. Many felt they were "entitled" under some silly idea that free speech is free, and that they should get to do what they want on other people's forums AND their dime. Get real, bud! That doesn't happen in the real world and you know it!

Long story short is this...there was a huge influx of basically rude, mean, jilted and argumentative people (aholes in short) from other forums recently. The level of sarcasm increased, people got bent out of shape, the mods got PM'd to take care of ridiculous discussions. In other words, things started to get out of control. So new rules were made up. They only got made up because people wouldn't do the right thing unless forced to.

So please, before you get too high and mighty, ask yourself the answer to this analogy.

You throw a gear party at your place. I show up and I'm cool for awhile, then I start telling you you're full of shit, insult your guests and you, take a crap on your carpet and your gear, and then want to sell my Peavey Bandit by placing a "For Sale" sign on it while placing it on top of your vintage Marshall stack, still talking crap all the way about free speech and the rights I have at your house.

Whaddya do?

Kick my miserable childish ass, roll it to the curb, throw my amp on top of potty mouth and tell me to thumb for a ride home because you're slashing my tires on my ride and gang banging my lady?

(Yeah, that's what I thought! And that's what I'd do to you if you acted like that, too!)

There are far too many who hide behind screen names and multiple identities. If we all talked online like it was someone in the same room, I seriously doubt any of this bickering and posturing would happen. But let's face it, there are many who have no life but arguing on the internet, and those who once thought of contributing get tired of it. I have seriously cut back on what I offer on the TGP because there's always someone who's an engineer with a theory, but no hands on experience who figures their theory is worth more than my 9 years of touring, and extensive speaker & cab testing. Uh, ok...fine.

I always elude to that mentality or attitude with the notion that men can tell woman the pain involved in giving birth better than they can.

I've been chastised for answering a legitimate question about a Scumback for someone who asked because it wasn't phrased right for some ahole TGP member and was reported as spam (this was 2 weeks ago). Apparently when someone asked about a Scumback speaker that could deliver XXX tone, I responded with one of Pete Thorn's demo tunes he did for me two years ago, and that I thought this might be what he needed, give it a listen.

That was spam, gents. Even though it was addressing the OP's question directly, it was outside of the Manufacturers area, so guess what, Jim got his hands slapped. Uh, ok...maybe the new rules were being enforced early.

Five years ago Celestion threatened legal action against the TGP because I posted pics of their Heritage G12M vs a real 20w pre rola G12M. Needless to say their claim of "We build them just like we did in the 60's!" was quickly disproved. I got not only a PM and email, but Scott Peterson's phone # to discuss that one. This was before membership fees for selling were introduced and I was a major contributor to the server fees. Scott didn't want to piss me off, but they just didn't have legal fees/representation to go up against Celestion in court for "disclosing trade secrets". FYI, I posted pics of the front of the cones of both speakers. Usually a "trade secret" is not visible to the naked eye if it's the outside of the actual product anyone can see.

So you can see how the size of the membership there, and the exposure can quickly cause a problem.

I have just enough time these days to hang at three places regularly: RT, Huge Racks, and the Metro Forum. Sure I still surf through the TGP and try to answer questions twice a day, but it's limited to a search function and selectively answering questions now.

Would I take the time to write this big a post there now? Hell no! I'd get chewed up one side and down the other, and I may get that here, but I'm pretty sure my point of view is pretty much right on with regard to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Don't be an asshole."

There has been plenty of boundary pushing on TGP lately, if you don't think so type in "Bikini Appreciation" on the search function and see what I mean! LOL

They're not all aholes at TGP, in fact, there's only a few. But the fact that they're so vocal led to rule changes. If someone had bitch slapped those people early on and not allowed them to run their mouth without backup, good reason, etc. you wouldn't have had to see those "new rules" put into place.

End of rant. Gotta pack up more crap. Have a good night.
