Haven't played guitar in 3 weeks

I haven't played in about 3 weeks. I just don't really have the desire to play much anymore. This feeling has been growing for a long time. I'm just more into my family and other hobbies I have. I stink at guitar and get frustrated anyway. I have no time for it really anyway. I've had to give up my man cave and turn it into a bedroom for one of my kids. I had to move my gear into my closet. Is it time to just sell off my gear and just buy an acoustic to plink around on occasionally?

I would say no. I think everyone needs breaks from hobbies at some point, so I would take a break and recharge, then play when you feel like it. If you have really cool gear, you may regret selling it off if you get the bug to play more.

I do have cool gear...but no skills to use it properly

It's fun for about 5 minutes...then i'm bored and would rather do other stuff.
I have VERY little space.
Money would be good to put into other hobbies but not necessary to pay bills etc...
I have put the guitar down for weeks at a time the last few years and keep ending up with the idea of selling off gear.

You could always keep one good amp, one good cab, one good guitar and go to that when you feel like playing

I understand. My problem is I have a lot of money (to me) tied up in an amp/cab that just sits there. It's my holy grail tone I admit but having the tone I want doesn't even keep my desire burning. So if I downsized i'd be compromising my tone and then I know i'd really never play at all.

Take a break from it! It's a safe bet you will have some regret down the road if you sell your gear. Give it time and then make the decision to sell.

I've gone through dry spells myself before. One of them was over 8 months long to where I did not come on a gear forum or play a guitar for nearly a year. It took a bit to get back into it but after a while it was not a problem.

Keep the gear in the closet and do what you like. If you do not see yourself ever touching the stuff again after a very long time pull all of it and unload it. No reason to feel bad for yourself as it is just gear

I have a Splawn Quickrod B+, EVH 2x12, ESP M-II, Fender Strat, and some pedals. Not near as much gear as most here on Rigtalk.

Yeah.....screw it. Pretty much anything can be re-purchased.

Once I get that thru my thick skull....it was easier to sell off stuff. When re-buying it was usually something different anyhow.

I know exactly how you feel, although my attitude is due to the fact that the type of music I favor is basically dead. The new country stuff has a nice rock edge to it, but still not my thing. I spend my playing hours these days writing originals that no one would care about, and rediscovering compositions from the 60's, 70's, and some early 90's stuff.

If you're done with it, don't feel bad about selling your gear... Times change, and so do we. You have a family, and there's nothing in the world that can top that!

Nothing wrong with taking a break. But you either play the guitar or you don't. I've run into people who say "oh, I used to play the guitar but I gave it up" or some other bs and I always come away thinking that just sounds weird. It's not bad for you like smoking or drinking heavily where you just quit...unless you really do suck. In which case; if you don't have the desire to get any better or don't have the aptitude or you really don't enjoy it then you should just hang it up .

If you just want to take a break, sell everything except your favorite guitar, buy a little practice amp and don't look back I was completely ampless for 8 or 9 months but I still played every chance I could and went on the forums...

I go 3 weeks all the time during the long days of summer. Just more things to do with more daylight + all my setup is upstairs and we keep that thermostat on 80 without guests. I play waaaaay more during the late fall/winter.

I've played for 31 years straight with no "break".

I agree with the earlier post that either you play or you don't. I could never give it up. It's part of who I am. It makes me happy.

Never give up the man cave. It's a downhill slide from there. Buy a sofa bed........
