Hearing protection

I've gotten back into playing drums and got some decent ear plugs that work fine for that. They are silicon but not molded for my ears..... they are alright and still let some highs come through but they have a tendency to slip out of position even though I clean them and my ear before playing.

I was curious if you guys have any experience with pro musician hearing protection. I'd like some I could play guitar in. Don't really want in ear monitors but don't mind paying for good molded ones. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you playing out or just jamming at home? When I played drums or had a stack cranked I would wear some in ear monitors and then wore those gun earmuffs over them. About as much isolation as I could ever imagine, now if only I lived somewhere to get that loud again.

I don't play out much anymore but I have a nice studio in my house that I have people come over and jam with. We can get as loud as we want. The drumming is mainly just me practicing.

You know I've never though of over the ear.... I wonder if they make those for musicians that don't muffle the highs. Since I'm not playing out I don't mind looking like a dork like Mr Gilbert does.... I'm kidding. :D

Thanks!

I don't think they make anything that balances the attenuation, mostly just because how it works. That's what I used the IEM's for. I had my amp or kit mic'd up and I was listening through my IEM's. Then with the attenuation of those and then the earmuffs on top I could barely hear the kit with the mics off, and not at all if they were on. You feel it more though, it's a cool feeling. You can be playing in a tiny bedroom and with only hearing the mic'd up sound, add some EQ and reverb and you close your eyes and imagine any venue you want. Get some good drumless backing tracks.

Just joined a band for the first time in a while and I forgot how loud practices in a small space can be. I'm planning on making a trip to an ear Dr. and getting a custom made set of plugs. From what I hear that's the way to go and it shouldn't be too much (under $200), which is a small price to pay to save your hearing. The other guys in the band don't use anything at all and I don't get it, I wear hearos currently and it's still loud!

Let me know how that goes, I've always been interested in it but haven't had a real reason for it yet.

Wow you guys must be loud. Used to have this issue years ago when I played in a band with a keyboard player frig he was loud LOL but if you play with good guys really do you have to crank it? Our mix is just about level with our drummer and he has toned it down and doesn't bash like he used to ,no need and we still rock out and get the "vibe" going. Never get complains to turn down and I use a Wizard amp !

I can't imagine playing without hearing protection (unless you're on a huge stage or something). I just those blue hearos and they work pretty well without sounding flubby. I definitely should get some custom plugs though.

If you have the option to crank an amp without the cops being called, and you have an amp worth cranking then what would stop you?

I'm in a similar situation, about to start jamming at full volume again with some buddies. Gonna ditch the foamies, and get a pair of these:
http://www.earplugstore.com/westone-tru ... lters.html

Read and heard nothing but good things about them, and they're not ridiculously expensive. I'm going to an audiologist to get my molds done , even though earplug store offers a home kit. From my research, the mold really makes or breaks the effectiveness of the plugs. And if I'm dropping that much coin, I want it to be as good as possible. I like the fact that you can swap out the filters too.
