I've had various combos of the following speakers:

-Hellatone 60
-Hellatone 60L
-Scumback BH75
-Scumback H55
-WGS Retro 30
-WGS Reaper HP
-Hellatone 30
-Celestion H30 "Anniversary"
-Celestion k-100

These always went into a vertical 2x12, semi-open back. My final favorite combo is the Hellatone 60L/K-100. I have much more control over the presence and treble, especially at higher volumes. All of the other speakers would get fizzy/squelchy/piercing at too high a volume, and some stages required my 50w amps to be pushed halfway AND I do like a bit of preamp gain.

I can run all the preamp gain I want now with more clarity at higher volumes AND cut.

My amps are an EVH 5153 50w and Egnater Seminar head modded by BFG to a hot rodded JCM800 circuit.

YMMV, but I am VERY pleased to have ended this 1.5 year journey.

It's great to finally settle on an amp or speaker/combination that "does" the right tone...I've had that moment with the 2 cabs I have, a '82 1982A cab with G12 80s, and a '79 1960A with G12 65s..they were made for the Marshalls that I have. Just the perfect fit for an 800. I may pick up an MF280 just to have V30s..I think they come with the same 60L that you have...

Awesome! Hey JYD - I also have a 5153 50w head - can you tell me in possibly greater description/detail how this combination of speakers sounds with this? I currently have mine running thru 2 MesaV30s in a Whitebox Modern 2x12.

Thanks and congrats!!!

I hear ya on that combo! Very close to what I use in my Bogner 412. I really like it, but sometimes I feel my mids aren't as pronounced as they should be.

I call the V30, H30, BH75, H55, etc. all "flavored" speakers. Most are GB variants, except the V30.

I LOVE loud, power and preamp stage volume: my 2x12's with all of these other combinations did not. It would get fizzy, white noise-y, undefined, and just overall too trebly.

Once I moved from closed back 2x12's, my sound became less directional, but still had the above characteristics at loud stage volume. So, I was able to dial back presence and treble, but still felt I needed it for cut.

Now, I can dial in more treble and presence for assisted "cut" BUT it does NOT get the fizzy, squelchy, overbearing speaker distortion sound. It's clearer and more articulate at those high volumes, BUT it still cuts like the 5153 can.

However, my 5153 does not cut as well as my hot-rodded Eggie. The Eggie is a JCM800 hot-rodded circuit. The EVH will never cut as well as that, in my opinion. However, it still cuts.

Plus, I'm the lone guitar player in my band, so I'm not fighting another guitar in this mix. THAT would be the real test, I think.
