Welcome aboard dude! I used to play an AVT100 combo 7 or 8 years ago- my main tip for that thing is to boost the sh*t out of it! Try using a boost and noise suppressor in front of it and see what you think. I used to max the level and turn off the gain on the boost, then max the channel volume for all the channels, then adjust the master volume/channel gains to taste. Sadly I can't remember the EQ settings I liked, but if I remember correctly I hit the scoop button then maxed the mid knob for high gain stuff. As for new gear, I'll leave it up to the other guys fuel your gas

And I'd probably buy the preamp and FX and rack casing before getting a power amp since I can run it off my Marshall for a time

I see some recommending the MP1. They are not bad, and they are pretty affordable, but I would pass on that. I used one for several years, and they are good, but imo, there are many better options. Are you looking to use all rackmount stuff, or a head and rack for fx? If your not looking to stay with all rackmount stuff, I'd consider the Peavey Triple XXX. GREAT amp for the money! You can get them all day long for $400-$500, and they are very flexable! Tons of gain and tight low end! Some find them hard to dial in, due to the active eq on the gain channels.

I am a die hard tube fan! So, as such, I would consider upgrading your amp first.

For my rig, I chose to use a GCX and Groundcontrol to control a hand full of pedals and a Rocktron Replifex for delays and verbs. The Rocktron has amp relays, and they are cheap!

So I really like the RJM amp gizmo, for those who have experience with them, do you know if you can program amp EQ with it or will I have to add another MIDI device to turn on a graphic EQ alongside my FX unit channel to get the EQ/gain boost?

If your amp has an EQ that is foot switchable, then yes, this device coupled with a midi floorboard will allow you to control it. Otherwise, you could use something like the Voodoo lab GCX to engage/disengage an EQ pedal routed through the loop. If your amp doesn't have a lot of switchable features you may want to consider the Voodoo lab control switcher. It is a lot cheaper than the amp Gizmo, very well built, and has a 5 year warranty.
Welcome aboard, and proceed with caution, as this place can be a danger to your wallet. It's not to late to buy a Plexi and a Tubescreamer, and forget you ever found this place

I learned to play in the early-mid 80s. I started gigging in the mid-late 80s and continue gigging to this day... playing everything from Maiden/Rush/Ryche/Priest/Ozzy/Dokken/Etc to Waylon/Willie/Buffet/Etc. I started-out playing pedals into amps. Then spent at least 15 years lugging a rack around (ADA MP-1, ART DR-X, etc). And for over 10 years it's been back to pedals and amps. I got some great tone out of my rack and even got some nice recordings with it. But honestly... outside of direct "sketch" recording and quiet practice... I dunno why anyone goes with racks anymore. I did have an Eleven Rack for a while and liked it (for a while), but for gigging I just prefer the punch, cut, and response of a tube amp. Of course one can get nice tube preamps and power amps for a rack, but I've found that regular "integrated" tube amps designed as a cohesive unit give me much more satisfaction than blingy lights, MIDI switching, and lots of knobs and buttons. I can't tell you how many nights on the road that I'd be frantically paging through parameters on rack gear and hitting the 'Save' button as I was trying to tweak my tone for the room I was playing. It got REAL old. Compare that to a tube head where I may occasionally turn-around to turn-up/down the volume a hair or maybe tweak a tone control once in a while. Regular tube amps seem to require less tweaking for me, but even if they need to be tweaked -- it's a quick twist-of-the-knob affair (which is why I did like the Eleven Rack).

Anyways... to each his or her own, but I've been there, done that and haven't had ANY desire to go back there in over a decade. I'm still curious about the Kemper and will no doubt have one eventually, but I still doubt I'd really want to gig one. I'm a set-it-and-forget-it kind of guy and the less available tweaking, the better for me.

Dude asked for help, and I made a suggestion based on personal experience with some of the gear mentioned. MP1's were very popular when they came out, and are not bad, as I had originally stated. I did ask if dude wanted to go all rack. I have gotten better results not going that route. As Shark Diver mentioned, you will get better results going with a really good amp, then adding effects. IMO the XXX is hard to beat for the $. ymmv.

I do agree that he will get better results with a tube amp..as I have sold my ADA and everything else that I had with it. As someone previously mentioned, just save up and get something really good to start with a loop to add your FX..I use a Jubilee and it's chased everything else out of my house..Friedman, Voodoo, Cameron, Fortin, Gower, Boogie, Bogner, Soldano...the list goes on. You can sometimes snag one off ebay for 1200...but I digress...
