Help: Erect or Eggie5 for high gain?

It's funny. I had a Road King II and now have an M4 with the Erect in one slot. I don't think the Erect reminds me of any of the rectos I've played. It's too smooth for a recto and IMO, feels like it has less gain. I run my gain settings at 3pm in both channels. It also has better lead tones than a recto does but again IMO, not as aggressive as a recto. If the EG3/4 is darker than the EG5, than I think I'd like one. I prefer the MHG to the EG5.

A lot of guys say they can't use the EG3/4 in a band setting for rhythm because it doesn't cut enough, so many use it for leads. I haven't tried but I know the SL2 is a great module in a band setting. I didn't like the EG5, but I also am not a Saldono fan - sounds too 80s to my ears. I do really like the Erect, which I also think is versatile and has just a huge tone, plus leads sound nice on this module as well....which to me is rare for a Rectifier. Kind of like a Rectifier with some Marshall thrown in. With the EG5, I felt like I could never sontrol the gain nore get it past for 10:00 or 11:00 for the heaviest of metal, which I guess is fine if it were my tast but again it felt too stiff as well.

Unless I get an E2, I don't know how much live play time the EG3/4 will see.

However I dial the EG5, it's 80s voice still seems to shine thru' (well...possibly my playing migt be helping)... the ERect is definately more modern...but if you want to go all the way pick up a Randall Grail or a Recto modded to Grail specs...definately more aggressive then the slightly more polite ERect....

..alternatively, got the ERect sent to Friedman and have him perform the Lynch Grail treatment on it

I think EG3/4 definitely has plenty of gain, unless you are some kind of super high gain freak. Especially the B channel is very hot and punchy.

Yes, but the EG3/4 is weird. It has lots of mids but seems to get lost a bit in a band mix for rhythm.

Honestly, I never thought of the Erect as not aggressive enough for me. The little bit of politeness adds to its solo abilities to my ears. Nice compromise. I think this module does lead well, it has some nice sag and feels real smooth for a Rectifier. I won't rule out giving the EG5 another shot in the future. How are the mids on the Grail? Decent for both rhythm and lead?

I thought of having either my SL2 or Erect modded by Friedman but I don't want to lose any of the 'built in' Egnater magic. If I could just get the SL2 to sound a touch bigger like the Erect, that would be it for me. You know, a Pete Tulley modded Randall XTC is sweet as well.

So, what is the Lynch Grail treatment on the Erect? That could be an idea for the future - get a second Erect and have this done. Can you tell me what this does. Does he have a site with samples, etc? Thanks man.

It's too long since I had my ERect..but Dave can mod the Grail to the 'Lynch spec' and also change the E'Rect in the same manner.

A Grail has some lower value components in the input path (handful of resistors on a Randall) plus a cap change in the tonestack...people say it's lower gain than a Recto/ERect...I say it simply has more clarity.

The Lynch spec I do not have (and if I did, it's DaveF proprietary) but I know it's not the same as the Randall shipping Grail module.

I think the Grail sounds excellent for both applications...maybe not as full sounding as a real dual rectifier but what do I know, my mids are <12 o'clock (mid scooping bastard that I am)

The comment about 'smooth' with the ERect is dead on tho' and as you say..this improves the module for lead applications...A grail is also tighter than an ERect even with the Bass boost at '0'. I preferred the Grail for rhythm and since I suck at anything that's not power chords

I'm getting another Pete/gigmods special soon tho' and I might have to change my recommendation

Sure, the EG5 can do those type of Soldano tones that were famous in the early 90s, but if you dont play like that, it wont sound like that. The preamp is a tool like anything else. It shapes what you put in. I used the EG5 on every high gain rhythm on our EP and I really dont think our music sounds 80s at all.

Similarly, if you are playing is an 80s style, simply changing a module wont make it sound current.

When you think about it, there are very, very few amps out there that actually "sound" like "one" style of music. An AC30 can sound like "Hard Days Night" or "We Are the Champions" or newer foo fighters stuff. A JCM800 can sound like appetite for destruction, or Black Label Society.

I preface all this with the fact that I suck at music and I play only to please myself...

I kind of agree with that, since I did hint that my (hackneyed 80s) playing has an effect but go, redial the tone and play more modern stuff on it......you'll be sat there thinking "this tone would sound better if.."

I don't know what I'm trying to say...when I hear the EG5 it makes me want to play it a certain way base on that tone...if I redial the knobs, I usually end up putting 'em back before I finish playing...

Agreed. If anything, the SL and SL2 or for that matter, the EG3/4 sound more "80's" than the EG5, to me anyways. I've never understood that either Matt, but we all have different ears.

That my friend was a one take EG5 thru the Godin bridge pup with a half ass prefab fruity loops loop. No frills no verb just straight up M4, Rivera TBR5, and Godin. I don't even play heavy music anymore. Just wanted to quell the rumor about it not being able to cover the wuggy-chuggz.

well.. here's what I have to say.. the eg5 is more of an 80's rock voiced module than a modern rock module. While the eg5 may be suited for modern rock tones, it definitely excels at the 80's rock tones.

for a more modern tone, erect for sure!

EG3/4 has enough gain to do Nickleback but it wont sound at all like their sound. They use Rectifiers. It will do Buckcherry though SL2 would be better.

For the original poster, if like Mesas, get the E-Rect. If youd prefer a Soldano / Diezel tone, get the EG5. Its all about preference. Both are great.

Weird thing is a lot of modern bands also use Marshally amps. I am a Perfect Circle fan and I know he is a Marshall guy. You can get modern heavy with the EG3/4 or SL2 not just 80s as I find these modules very Bognerish. The EG5 and Erect also should do these fine....but I am gaining new respect for the EG5 after hearing so many clips.
