I’m looking for a new guitar and need suggestions.

The best playing guitars I have are actually the Entry Level USA made guitars. I had 2 Gibson SG J’s, a PRS S2 and Rasmus Guthrie Goven. All four guitars are mahogany bodies with little to no finish. No fancy paintjobs or thick poly finishes. Tung oil’d necks. And for whatever reason, they sing and just sound better than my other guirars.

Those other guitars are the superstrats. Bright colors, maple fingerboards, Floyd Rose trems, hot pickups. For years, a Charvel and an EBMM Axis were my main guitars.

So I’m looking to try and get that sound of a mahogany body and neck, with little-to no finish, an Entry Level USA feeling model, but with the shred-guitar motif- fast playing neck/ floyd rose/ maple fingerboard. What guitars are out there that fit this description?

I have a Charvel San Dimas Reissue (mid 1990-ies made in the Ontario custom shop at that time). This guitar suits your description pretty well (apart from mahogany neck, but it has a THICK rosewood fingerboard). Great guitar and there were serveral models (HH, SSH, floyd, wilkinson,...).

Here is one of those series on reverb:

The Suhr Natural Modern Satin, whilst more-expensive than you might want right now, seems to fulfil your requirements IMHO, mate. The consolation is that it's Suhr's cheapest off-the-shelf model and IMHO sounds better than a Modern Pro, which is basically double the price.

Mahogany body and neck. It's literally the sound of mahogany, which I personally love, and without any tubbiness or muddiness.

My Rasmus Guthrie Govan is what would go on to be the Suhr Modern Satin. Mine was built in china (body and neck), sent to Suhr to be put together/ plek'd/ usa pickups and trem added. Its a totally killer guitar. Differences from the Suhr modern are: Different neck shape, mine has ping locking tuners and the Suhr has hipshot locking tuners, The Suhr doesn't have a floating trem but the Rasmus does, the Suhr has SS frets. The Rasmus was built in China and Assembled in the USA while the Suhr is 100 percent American. FWIW, The Suhr Modern is under consideration.

I've had my eyes on this guy. What do you think? Jackson USA Soloist, all mahogany-

My Modern Satin came with a floating (Gotoh) trem, so I don't know why yours didn't; must've been one of the penalties of gettin' the Chinese-made parts?

Balaguer might be worth a sniff. I grabbed an Archetype a while back and it is amazing. Dare I say, almost if not on par with the Mayo I have, the Suhr I had, and the Andersons I've fondled.

Glad you agree, mate.

When he said mahogany body and neck it was an instant no-brainer in my mind. Besides, it's not something you see in off-the-shelf Strat-style guitars very often.
