I’d start with tuners and nut, get it nailed staying in tune.

Gut the electronics for sure, but start with the nut especially. Then get the fret ends dressed. Then get it set up nice.

....then fuck with the tuners maybe, if youre one of those autists who has to have locking.

...and THEN, finally, fuck with the pickups.

I'd say go the opposite way and stick 1k into it. pickups, pots, wiring, new neck, new tuners, new hardware, new guitar body ... then reuse the strings.
