What about a KPA?

Just a thought... with the budget you're talking about it could be the solution.

The KSR Ares is a killer that can be had for around $1400 used and can easily do everything you mentioned. It’s got a unique voicing with a ripping, pissed off midrange. Reminds me of all the good qualities of an Uber, Recto and SLO, with none of the bad.

I love my Orthos. I wish he would come out with a Juno based Ares.

I've been thinking about a Herbert for myself lately.

I'll put my C+ Coliseum up against a Herbert any day of the week and twice on Sunday

Count me in.

I'll throw a Butterslax into the mix. Will get you 60s thru modern hot rod Marshall sounds. Loving mine!!

As someone who has gigged in the past and in my late 40s, just some side notes separate from finding good tone. I'm sure you remember what a pain in the butt it can be gigging whether it be amp weight, tubes, etc. I was just going to say when you are searching, keep some of the things in mind like how easy it is to swap tubes or change a fuse if one blows. Or reliability/versatility of a certain type, etc.
Yeah, you're absolutely right...one of the reasons I sold off my Orange cabs, man they were heavy

Appreciate the reminder man, I do need to keep all that in mind!

No problem brotha! My hernia surgery scars keep me reminded. LOL

It's hard to beat a mkiv. Throw some E34L's in there and an OD and get playing. I heard clips of one with KT77's and it was flat out massive.

I would also recommend a splawn promod KT88. I like it a little more than my KT88 nitro especially since the PM is more versatile.

Diezel VH2. Heavy as F#CK gain and the best clean channel I have owned in a loooooong time. It is heavy. It is big. The sound makes it worth it. YMMV.

I will be selling my EVH 5150III 100 Watt Stealth to make space for this one (still have two 50-watt EVH's; a Kruze Stealth-modded 6l6 and a new EL34), so I still will have the EVH sound. The VH2 is THAT good!

Since getting my Revv Generator 120. All gas gone.... Except the bean related ones........

Sick amp. Very versatile and excellent at it too..

Most amps are made of metal. Shows self the door forever...

I don't want "somewhat metal"...I want every part that CAN be metal to be metal. Metal knobs, metal no tolex shell...

When people look at my amp, I want them to say "how much more metal can that be? answer...none."

Then you want the dual ractifer...nothing looks more metal.

Herbert. Do it.
Those 3 words have been quietly chanting in the back of my brain for the last week or so...
Go with the D-Moll, save yourself the extra ka-ching, takes 4 powertubes, not 6, and literally slays in all departments that the Herbert does.....

....and beyond.

Hey guys...just want to say thanks again for all the input. These types of threads tend to generate a metric ton of suggestions, but that's exactly what I was looking for...a lot of things mentioned that were not on my radar to look into which is excellent.

Every amp mentioned I'm taking a look at (dirtyfunkg, thanks for the KPA suggestion as well, I probably need to reassess digital, a lot has changed since my Fractal from years ago). I have no idea what at this point...but something WILL be purchased!!

Hey guys, after years of not playing out, I’m back in a band like situation and need a new head.

I sold all my big amps some time ago, so my house rig stuff obviously isn’t going to cover it (literally using a Katana head in the short term).

Here’s my quandary...like a lot of guys here, I’ve owned my share of pretty decent amps. For this particular gig, it’s mostly 80’s, ranging from Dokken to Metallica. From prior experience, I would likely just grab another BE100 and be done with it.

But outside of this gig, I’m back in my “other” world of melodic and technical death metal. Children of Bodom to more Necrophagist style (Psycroptic, Gorod, Obscura, etc). No djent, a lot of melodic playing to go with the riffage.

So I’m wondering if there is one amp that would be pretty good at both. I’m leaning towards a more heavy amp, I found the Fireball 100 to be surprisingly versatile. ENGL SE I remember could kind of do it all, but I always preferred the FB slightly. Used to have a Hagen I liked, but Herbert is on the brain for some reason. Love Soldano’s, but not the flavor I’m looking for at the moment. Not a 5150 fan.

Some of these have sounded pretty good at low volumes, that would be desirable even though again it will get use at band volume. Will probably run it through my V30 Jubilee cab for now, though I also still have a Marshall GB cab as well.

Again, FB100 and Herbert kind of calling, but want to think this through before pulling the trigger. Input appreciated!

Been using a Herbert for the last 2 years. It's an absolute beast! Best High gain channel switcher I've tried, by far.

OP- what you're describing sound more like something in the Diezel camp. Not a herbie. Maybe a VH4

Dokken is an SLO/ Crate Stealth (thicker sounding amp and the guitar and pickup usually have a lot of high end and high mids). Nowdays George plays a Brown Eye/ HBE.
Metallica is a Mesa Triaxis Preamp and VH4.

For that stuff, you could probably get away using a Synergy setup with HBE/ BE and VH4 modules. Salvation audio also does a great Mesa MarkIV module.

For something a little more modern but still with the classic marshall sound, you might want to check out a Splawn Nitro. Growl for Metallica. Snarl for Dokken and does modern metal like a champ.
as a secondary reccomendation, a Friedman JJ might get you in the ballpark too.
