Help with Bill Lawrence pickup and amp selection

Hello Rig Talk community! I’m new here.

I’m here to ask for suggestions on selecting a Bill Lawrence pickup, as well as an amp.

On the pickup:

I’m looking for something chunky that has good tight response on the bottom end for good palm-muted riffs (think Nuno). I seem to always get a round, warm, flubby sound out of my Bill & Becky L500XL on most amps. This is not always the case. It seems hit and miss. I’ve heard that going to a less hot pickup will give more tightness and less roundness. I thought going with a Wilde Pickups L500L might work better. The pickup will be going in my custom Charvel-style guitar that I’m building. The body is basswood. I’d like to open up a discussion about this. I know I want to stick with Bill Lawrence as I love the fatness they have.

On the amp:

This might be a stupid question, but I was wondering if a MG100hdfx is a gig-worthy amp? I used to have one that I loved but had to get rid of it. I just loved the fact that it got incredible, organic Marshall sounds without really having to do anything to it or spend any money. I just didn’t know if it would cut through a band or if it had enough headroom for that. Right now I’ve got a 5153 EL34 50W that I’m not very fond of. It just doesn’t have the sound I’m looking for. It’s brand new and I’ll probably sell it. I’ll probably buy another one of those MG heads off GC used regardless if I can gig with it or not, because they’re great bedroom amps. I guess I’m just looking for opinions on this amp and/or suggestions for other amps. Need a modded-Marshall sound.

Unsure of the pickup, but as for the amp, sell the evh and get the new Marshall DSL100hr or any of the low wattage variants. It is a cheap and great head, cuts through the mix very well and if you are wanting a Marshall sound I’d say you’d be happy

I have 2 BL pick ups and they are both thin sounding with no fatness at all. I think they were better when I had the Q filter wired in but that was years ago. I have them in a dull sound guitar to lift it a little ..works but still not overly happy with them

I use a L90 (6h), and i really like it. Is full and punchy with a nice clarity. Is been long time i not use a L500 (i have a new one somewhere), but i think i prefer his L90 design. L45 are good also.

What’s the difference between the hr and the old DSL? I watched some videos of it and it does sound that great from the videos, but that doesn’t really mean anything.

The new one has in my opinion a much tighter low end, not as spiky highs and also (my opinion) it feels better. The reverb is not as noticeable on the hr, but the gain channels are more versatile and defined. Also the new one has a half power mode for bedroom playing.

Of course it would be easier to go try one out if you can rather than trying to understand my babble, but quality and sound wise it will be a big step up from the HDFX

Put a parametric EQ before the amp set to a narrow bandwidth mid hump around 800-1000HZ, even with the EVH. You’ll get what you want.
