Help with ##%@% noise gates!!

So I ordered a Decimator G-String pedal months ago and there is still some noise with my 5150-III and pedalboard. I was reading from someone else that there is some weird grounding issue that happens with this pedal when everything is hooked up.

I'm looking for a great, cheaper pedal that can do cut noise in chain and loop. I wanted to get opinions on the Silencer by Electro Harmonix and others you guys use. I hated the Sentry, so that is the only one I'm not a fan of.
 
Are you using the same power supply for both front end and loop based pedals?

If the amp is really noisy the gate won't hide that as much...it will keep the feedback at bay though. Noise/hiss from pedals or higher gain settings is hard to dampen. IME anyway, with the Decimator. I still use it though.
 
I used Decimators for years (which are great) which quickly became replaced after experiencing the Fortin Mini Zuul. Awesome little pedal. See if you can find a used one. You won’t be disappointed.

I love the Decimator but when I touch the cord, pickups, etc, I get hmthis ungrounded sound. I guess it is common with these
 
A signal chain..details on power supply ..pics or a video would help to figure out the problem..
 
Start by removing the entire pedal board first. just guitar/gate/amp with the gate both up front and in the loop.
Keep the gates power supply separate from the rest of the board.
If that solves the issue,then you know where to start trouble shooting.
Now add 1 pedal from your board(one that has its power supplied by the boards power supply).
Now you have to offer a sacrifice to the noise gods by farting into your bridge pickup while chanting "owa tana siam".

That's not what I've experienced....I run mine in front though; is yours front or loop? I will say that mine has to have the jacks cleaned occasionally. Interesting.....not sure which version I have. I bought it used in 09 I believe. Replaced a Boss NS2...which shaved some highs compared to the Decimator.

**also, I run it first in my chain...then the boost pedal(s).
 
5153 is a noisy amp...if you boost it as well it will be noisy...
Naybe a preamp tube has gone wild...I would check them as well...

I have it like you, in front, and then also run cords to the loop thru the other jacks.

Let me know what you find out, I have an EVH 5150 III 6L6 V2 Head and have tried my Boss NS-2 and bass player's original ISP decimator and neither of those did anything :cautious:

I'm wondering if it is a preamp tube too. I ordered a Silencer pedal so we'll see, lol
 
Early edit; addressing the source of the hiss and hum in my opinion is better than trying to shut the door on it. Now,….


Every single gate ever made is going to chop off the attack. It cannot look into the future, it has to hear something before it can react, it’s like taking a shit and then spraying Lysol saying “I don’t smell anything“.
Buy a Boogie. You can run a Boogie Mark series amp at extremely high gain with zero noise. Those 5150s are nothing but fucking noise.
I bought a decimator. It’s a tone eater.
Can’t you guys figure that out that when you put a gate in the line, there goes your fucking tone? Seriously, play for about half a minute without the gate, put the gate in the line and if you can’t hear a difference, either your ears are shot or mine are super sensitive.

It may be, but it's not been my experience with it.

I have loved mine, I think it is the G-String II? I have it set up when my clean guitar goes into it first, then it passes on to the rest of my pedal chain. The noise gate section of the pedal is inserted into the effects loop of the amp, that is where it gates; but it is triggered by the initial clean signal of my guitar going into it first. There are a few ways to set it up, but I found this to be the most effective one for me.

Meh, I used to own a Decimator G-String, it was pretty good. It got booted by a Zuul which got booted by a Lichtlaerm Key and the Gate. That was a nice pedal for sure but then the Zuul + came out which has the extra tweaking options and that is where I've landed at the moment.

It's very transparent and retains all of my attack. My tone sounds glorious LOL.

I know I need to try one of these, I tried getting together the parts for a clone build, but I never did finish that. It's not an emergency, but it's probably next on the list.

Yeah see, I have mine setup like that. I plug I to the pedal, first in the chain, then have the effects loop going in. Even on my clean channel, I'm getting noise. It is like something isn't grounded. It is not horrible but I want as quiet as possible.

I farted into the neck pickup and think it is the issue....lol
