Henning Amps production prototype is DONE!!

Hey guys, finally an update...

I received my prototype chassis a few days ago, Chassis isn't powder coated or silk screened as the production amps will be, but I needed a prototype to test fit and build the amp and it is stupid expensive to do a full production model with the powder coating/silk screening, so this one is just plain steel. I finished the power section and did a bunch of other stuff. Should finish the build tomorrow. Chassis seems o have been spec'd right on! Mini toggles and 3mm LEDs line up perfectly. In fact as far as mechanical install of the parts, the chassis is perfect. Can't wait to see the finished production chassis. I'll have white gloss powder coat with black silk screening and gloss black powder coat with white silk screening. Here's the progress so far:

Can't wait to finish it and start testing!

Just kidding! Man, that is sweet. That chassis is one thing I like to see in a custom amp. Taking the time now with the prototype, will damn sure pay off in the end too. You have the patience of Job! Even when you get all the fly leads and pots in, it looks like it will be free from a lot of clutter and stray wiring. Getting all those diodes and mini's lined up perfect has to be a PITA.

Thanks, yeah, it is looking pretty clean. Sure beats what I had to do to get the hand-wired prototype done!

Wait'll you see the production powder coated and silk screened chassis with the branding and everything on them, man! And you get a choice of color for the chassis and silk screening as well as your choice on knobs and other cosmetics!

Yeah, I've had the luxury of doing this slowly and getting everything exactly like I want it. I think it will be a very clean and noise free amp...

In terms of the build quality and amp to amp consistency, this is a major step up. PCB is the only way to really do something like this IMO... Also wait until you see the finished amp with the powder coated/silk-screened chassis with the branding and the crazy thing I'm doing with the head case. This thing is gonna look cool and somewhat non-traditional, whereas my hand-wired prototype was very Marshall looking...

In terms of the circuit and tone:

1.) It now has two separate preamp channels instead of just switching in and out one gain stage. I did this for two reasons. One - to have separate tone stacks and controls for each channel. Two - to simplify the switching in a major way. My previous design required 5 relays in the amp and 4 latching relays in the foot switch. Now it is just 3 relays in the amp and no relays in the foot switch. Less complicated, less to go wrong.

2.) There are way more tonal options. Besides the separate tone stacks, there are three saturation modes for each of the two channels and the solo boost mode (none, more, most). In the Plex channel, there is now a switch that is like jumping the inputs in a plexi.

3.) I made the three foot switchable options available via three output jacks so that if you have something like a Voodoo Labs GCX and GCP, you can switch channels, switch to the solo boost mode, or turn the efx loops on/off via midi. I will also provide a special cable and a foot switch with the amp, for those who prefer non-midi switching

That's it, but the flexibility is way improved. Any tone you could get out of the hand wired prototype that was at the Lugo shootout is available in this head, and WAY more...

quick question though: pardon the ignorance, but i have seen quite a bit of your posts but still am not quite sure whats going on. is this a production amp you are custom building (i assume so, just wanted to ask). also what kinda tones is the amp capable of ? it gonna cater to the modern metal guys, or the older 80's guys or both ?

Haha yeah i worded that wrong. I didnt mean the older guys, just the older 80's rock/hair metal ... Or like i like to call em 'the good ol days , before some of the shit people call music nowadays

Thanks man! This is going to be the first production amp from my company (that I'm just launching), Henning Amplification. I think in this amp, there is something for everyone, so I'm not really targeting it at any particular kind of player. The amp can do nice cleans to classic rock, to 80s metal and heavier. I think a wide range of players will find tones they love with it... If you click on my music page in my sig, you can hear the hand wired prototype do several different tones. It was also one of the amps that participated in the Lugo amp shootout, so if you can find those clips, you can hear more tones there. It was used for all the guitars on an (as yet) unreleased solo record that Dee Snider just did as well. I've heard some of it and I dug the tones they got out of the amp...

I like what I see so far, Would be cool for you to put some clips or a vid showing the different tones available etc once you have it finished. WHat is the ballpark price you will ask for these and is each unit built to order?
