I'm in agreement with the above. If you can dial back the rod channel to get more traditional 800 sounds (big fat crunch) then I think the Rod is the way to go for versatility and because a lot of people interested in this amp will be cock rockers.

I'm also interested in whether or not you have ever played a Friedman BE and how you feel it compares in tone/feel/EQ to your amp/s?
You can definitely get the cool, traditional 800 sounds with the ROD channel, so that may be the way to go. I'll make a decision on the dual purpose board in a couple of weeks after mulling the current design a bit more...

This thing is going to have a PPIMV right? Because an essentially stock 800 with a PPIMV can get very "brown" in the right hands so sounds like this is the best way to go!

I'm loving this whole idea, ESPECIALLY the 2nd gain control, will that be foot-switchable ? This would cover a lot of ground. I would order the ROD channel. I wish there was a rack mount option too...

Yes, it has a PPIMV and the other good news is this design will have it on the front of the amp instead of the back...

So, the gain controls are for the first gain stage and the second gain stage, so footswitching them wouldn't make any sense. You adjust them both (and the associated bright switches) to shape the two gain stages of the amp individually - they are both always necessary. It's not two gain controls in the same place in the circuit that you can have adjusted differently and switch them in and out, which while cool, isn't what I'm going for here.

Rack mount is cool, but I don't see enough demand personally...

I wasn't sure if I was reading you right about the gain controls, thanks for clearing that up. I still like thefourthtlast1's idea better, but it's your amp. Any idea of ETA ?

Why couldn't both gain controls be dual concentric pots that could be switched between with the footswitch ?

Could do that, but it would increase the cost of the amp to the point that I could not bring it in at $1850-1999, which is my goal. It would make the footswitching even more complex than my flagship Cherry Bomb... It would also be strange visually because of the concentric knob I'd have to use with that pot as well...

Cool - I understand...

I'm targeting production at the end of the year now... may slip to Q1 2015 though...

Will the chassis be the same size as the CB, or smaller like, say a JMP Marshall 50 watt ?

I'm hoping it is in the 1850$ range.. I am giving this serious thought. It puts it well below a friedman smallbox and you know you are getting quality. Dropping that price ever so slightly means more will sell. You just watch!

What channel is Darren playing at the 2:26 mark for the scorching leads? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY3UfuHpgzE Digging that.

Right on, Steve!

I missed this, but can't wait to hear the finished product.

The CB chassis is 26" long and the new design will be 6" shorter at just 20". Same height and width...

CB in the head case is 29 1/4" and the new amp will be 21 3/4" in it's head case because the new head case can be sized smaller due to placement of the transformers.

My goal is $1850, but I want the quality to be 100% equal to the Cherry Bomb. Still doing the crazy over-engineered footswitch, only two button for this one...  I'm doing everything in my power to get this one to $1850 and not lose money... We'll see...

That is the ROD channel for sure...

Head shell has just been drawn up by me, so that is a while away yet. It will have the same metal Henning Amplification badge as on the current CB head shell. No crazy cut out metal panels on the head shell this time, but it'll still be cool!

I don't want to announce the name until I've got a finished "production" prototype. I'd say I should have that in November. It's cool and follows the fireworks theme of my line. ;)

35-40 lbs sounds about right for this new design.

I'll keep adding info to this thread as things move along...

Be fun to get some folks together for a demo of the prototype. I'll make that happen!
