Henning Bottle Rocket Preamp Pedal...

Tube pedals are overrated. I have a Kingsley constable, Sib Varidrive, effectrode tube drive, sushi box tachyon and owned a butler tube driver at one point. They all seem to have the same characteristic. Soft sounding, with a loose low end that makes them not very ideal for riffing. They sound fine for single note stuff though. At higher gain settings they tend to sound kinda splatty. (don't know if this is even the right word to describe them.) The one with the tightest low end out of all of these is the sushi box. But I still prefer solid state pedals.

Maybe I'm just doing it wrong.

Are you running your tube pedals before your amp or using them as a preamp into a power amp?

The Kingsley constable, which I have, is very good front of amp (FOA), but really shines when used as a preamp that is pushing the power amp, which is not surprising since that is what people love about the original amp. Also if you are running FOA, try a tubescreamer into it to tighten up the bass.

I do know what you are saying about tube pedals FOA compared to SS pedals. In general you will find SS pedals more immediate than their tube counterparts. If we talk about amps, some prefer SS amps to tube amps for metal for this very reason.

We should judge things on their features and sounds, but the fact is with most of the gear out there its buy to try. So biases like I have toward things with tubes comes into play with comparing prices and features.

I've only run them FOA. I did read the constable is best run as a preamp. The sushi box is also probably best run as a preamp as it is based on a rockerverb preamp and has 2 channels (clean and overdrive.) I do have a tubescreamer laying around that I have not used in a while but I will do some experimenting one day and see how it sounds stacked. It's just that I am super content with what I have on my board at the moment so I haven't whipped out any other pedals to play around with.

I do think that the bottle rocket preamp is a bit on the high side, but I've spent big bucks on pedals. (my collection of pedals is worth a lot lol.) I've hit corksniffery levels when it comes to pedals. Hard to rely on clips because they will always sound different in my hands.

Yeah I have an in-room clip I'll throw up. I am setting up some mics and shit for a more robust set of vids.
