I've really grown to like an amp that cleans up on the volume. Would u say that a preamp with lower gain in the early stages to progresivly more aggressive gain stages cleans up better?

If so, that would get my vote.

It's interesting, but so far in my testing and considering how much gain is on tap, both preamps clean up very nicely with the guitar volume. That was one of the things I was concerned about with the more aggressive gain stages early in the preamp, but it looks like the concern wasn't warranted.

Are you leaning toward the more aggressive preamp? You know what my vote is    :D

What's all this talk about a more aggressive preamp then????

So, yeah, there are two prototypes. BOTH are more aggressive than the Cherry Bomb ROD channel depending on how you set the two Gain switches and the Bright switches. Both preamps are capable of everything the Cherry Bomb ROD channel gets, plus added aggression if you so desire. BOTH also clean up nicely with your guitar volume knob.

Prototype 1 (white head case) has more aggressive component values in the first two gain stages and less aggressive values in the third as compared to Prototype #2 (black head case).

I've been playing Prototype 1 for quite awhile now and dig it. Now I'm on to Prototype 2 and it's killing as well. This is going to be a tough choice, which is why I'm gonna have a bunch of players try them both at the event I'm planning and give me feedback to help. There is no right or wrong here - they sound similar to be honest, but there are differences...

Will you be attending the NY Amp Show?

Unfortunately, no. I will be at the LA Amp Show this year though since I'll have the new amps to show...

WoW, looks awesome man....I was the first guy to suggest having dual gain controls...Im not saying you decided to do it because of me but its cool you ended up with the amp this way. I would imagine the gain controls are footswitchable ? , that paired with the second solo master makes this amp extremely versatile IMO. It makes it a single channel design that could do everything a giging guy might want on the fly.

I apologize if this has been discussed already but whats the estimated price point on these ?

Thanks man. The gain controls are not footswitchable - they control the amount of gain in the first and second stages of the preamp and both must be adjusted to taste. However, there are foot switchable masters - and each has a three way saturation switch. So, you can set the two gains to get the base tone and sustain and then set one master's saturation switch for more saturation for solos and set the other master's saturation switch off/or to the lower gain mode for rhythm. Then you can footswitch between the masters for your lead and rhythm tones. Either way, in either setting, the amp cleans up nicely with your guitar volume control. So, in essence, you have all the flexibility you were looking for, just implemented a little differently...

Each stage also has a bright switch that changes the sound and adds/subtracts gain.

$2199 including the heavy duty footswitch.

Curious how the 2 gain controls work. Is it like a deliverance where the 1st controls the gain + goes from bright and thin to thick as you increase, and the 2nd adds gain without affecting tone?

Not sure how the Deliverance gain controls work, but these just add/subtract gain mostly. Of course, as you do that, each stage is going to react differently in terms of brightness, thickness, etc. I think you just have to hear it yourself, but I'll be getting some other opinions soon and perhaps then I'll have a more definitive answer.

Now that is a great idea. Tweaking gain stages to taste? I am a 2204 addict. This sounds right up my alley and knowing how impulsive people are around here, I can't wait to snag one of these used in the classifieds as people continue to chase the sound that only exists in their head. When do you think these will start shipping?

Depends on when my cab maker and chassis maker can deliver, but I'd say this summer for sure.
