In my eyes, if a mod works and has proven to not screw up the amp, then why not? I see amps with Fja and voodoo mods all the time. I even have a friend (in a huge rock group) that tours with a voodoo mod.

I think it really comes down to price. A lot of people aren't as picky modding a 5150 or jcm800 but when it comes to the expensive stuff, you have to have the balls. Baller statues :)

Here's another angle -- if everyone tomorrow found out that Adam Jones from tool had a kruse mod on his vh4 everyone would be all over it. But it's really not that far fetched Of an idea. It's just that the big league guys can afford it and want the most out of an amp. Hey, isn't that how Friedman got started? Heck--- majority of these boutique amp builders got their skills from modding other amps.

I'm seriously in shook that engineeringtheenemy's herbert isn't sold. Amazing price and everywhere I read, the mod can be turned off. Why not have more tonal options????
I think it's kind of akin to dating... When you know a potential betty's had some modifications - that albeit may be to your liking and inevitably would have been undertaken by you - that weren't your doing, she suddenly seems "used" and "scarred". Second hand goods. Damaged.

Weird perspective, but that's my guess. There's a level of pristineness we all seek in a used bit of kit. Hence the "minty" and "like new" sales surpassing the "toured, gigged and used in a heavy smoking, drinking environment - played loudly all the time, and yes, there are marks on the tolex from cigarettes and rock glasses of varied liquors on the topside of the head".

i think it's the diezel guys that get a little tense (which I understand as it takes time to prove that the mod is a good thing or not). Look at the soldano slo. That amp is another expensive legend but the mods on that (depth, Hayes, etc...) are what people want when buying one. I bought one and couldn't imagine the amp without them.

Great post. 100% true!

Herbert with mods sold! For those that are "freaked out" by mods... I've owned a stock Herbert and a mod'd one in last 5 years.... I'll take the mod'd model anyday! Why would you not want an amp than can run STOCK and also be capable of other tones??? If the mod altered the "stock" tone I'd understand but it doesn't!

Sold to me. Figured since I have not read any bad thing about the mods so far, that there shouldn't be a problem. I think if anyone would be modding the amps it should be Kruse, it's not like he doesn't know the amps.

Don't use logic when talking to the sheep.
