This is a 2011 Diezel Herbert. I am changing the stock EL34s to SED 6L6s & Tung Sol 6L6s.

The Herbert is out of the shell and I'm looking for the EL34/6L6 switch. Does the Herbert not have this switch?

So there is not a switch that I have to set to EL34 or 6L6?

I am making 100% sure before proceeding because my VH4 was smoking when I forgot to set the switch correctly.

As far as I know the Herbert can use any combination of tubes in pairs. So, if you want to run 2 6L6 on the inner most pair and then run EL34's in the remaining pairs it is ok. I think as long as the pairs are matched up with the same type of tube. They are numbered 1-6. So it would be 1/6 as a pair then 2/5 and then 3/4. If that makes sense.

Hope that helps.

Herbert utilizes 6 power tubes, organized in 3 pairs with triple bias possibility. This allows use of 3 different pairs of power tubes, either the same or different types.

I copied that directly from the Herbert manual. Should be good to go bro.

Thanks. Yeah, I biased the Herbert. Right now it is something like this:

SED 6L6 pair = 50%
SED 6L6 pair = 60%
Tung Sol 6L6 pair = 60%

I'll bias them all at 60% tomorrow morning. I just wanted to jam right away, so I didn't fix the first pair.
It is sounding quite good.

:D

So you just kept it to 6L6's across the board, eh??

No urge for excitement???

If I had a Herbert, I'd be somewhere in the mix of 6550's, EL34's and KT77's/KT88's and MAYBE some 6L6's...maybe.

To each their own

6550 and el34 sounded killer in my einstein. Retained the mids but added tighter bottom and glassier highs. Nice combination. I think fortin likes this combo too.

You MUST Bias!!!
Beat me to it...sdhnc123 you can change out any of the power tubes but you must re-bias the amp. Otherwise strnage tones can come about.

My Herbert currently has 4 x EL34B and 2 x 6L6 great tones, but I'm wondering how it would go if I went with 6550's...

race, I went through that whole whirlwind for months, and I mean months. Probably went through 15 different PT combos, more than $700 big ones.

I ended up coming full circle and settled on the original Ruby EL34B-STR. Sounds the absolute best all around for me. If I had to go with a second choice it would be the Ruby 6550 STR - not as versitile and flexible, but massive puch.

And race, even if you swap out the exact same tube type, i.e. El34 to EL34 you gotta re-bias.

You gotta trust Pappie's ears.
