Here is how someone shipped me a $3K+ amp today

Had a customer who had a legit warranty issue (as it turned out, it was an intermittent wire) and I received it packaged like this today...

It is not my intent to embarrass or call out the guy in any way, so I'm obviously not going to give his name. I just had to show this as more of a PSA that this is NO WAY to ship a $3K+ amp. Especially one the individual expects to get back in one piece. As it flew half way across the country, the amp must have been literally hurtling around in that thin, mushy outer cardboard "box" with random pieces of styrofoam and a bit plastic wrap and only a couple of cardboard pieces and some plastic wrapped tightly around the amp. The outer box had absolutely no integrity at all, it was more like a cardboard bag. There is literally almost nothing to stop the amp from flying around in that "bag" and against anything UPS threw it against, including my front porch... Crazy...

The absolute MIRACLE of this whole thing is that SOMEHOW, it appears that there was no shipping damage to the amp except one messed up power tube. Either I built one indestructible amp, or this guy was crazy lucky, or a combination of the two... Anyway, the owner is one LUCKY dude and the amp is already repaired and will go back to him in a new set of packaging (which he'll need to pay for, of course)...

However, I say "APPEARS there is no shipping damage", because there is no way I can know for sure what will happen down the line from the amp being shipped this way that is not being exhibited right now. For that reason, I can no longer warranty the amp.

Once again, my reason for posting this is not to embarrass my customer, so let's keep this thread away from disparaging comments about the guy, OK? He's a good guy who made a mistake, but this could have been a VERY costly mistake for him and I'm hoping others won't make it. DON'T throw out the original packing materials guys!

Bottom line... if you have one of my amps and need to ship it, please use the original packaging materials, which I paid a ton of money for to ensure that these amps arrive safely. If you have thrown out the original packing, contact me and for $40 (my cost) and shipping, I'll send you a new set of packaging materials so you can ship it safely.

Whatever you do, PLEASE don't do this:

Yeah your custom made box and packing materials are perfect.
You'd be surprised at how many "boutique" amp builders still ship their product in insufficient packing right from the factory.

Steve - ever thought of selling your packing to folks who don't have one of your amps but want to ship an amp safely? Is the headshell normal marshall size?

"Cardboard Bag" lol , too funny.

LOL, Check out the puppy , First pic hes thinking WTF is this shiz, Second pic laughing at that crumpled package.

That is my Cherry Bomb :aww:

And I'm REALLY pissed off at my friend who packed it :bash: ... I blindly trusted him. He took care of packing and shipping expenses (since I don't have money right now). This is what I get for trying to go for the "cheap" route. I'll never make this mistake again...

I feel relived that the amp somehow survived!

Steve once again, thanks for taking pics of the horrible packaging and of course, fixing her.

Cheers.

Dang... I've got to say, UPS really goes the extra mile. I mean, they shouldn't even be handling something packed like that but they did, cuz they go the extra mile.

You're really lucky, man - your "friend" almost cost you a pile of dough...

Anyway... amp is ready to go back and gig again...

It can fit a 100W Plexi, just needs a bit of extra material since the depth is a bit smaller than my 8" shell. I shipped one in my packaging and it worked great. I don't really want to get into selling my packaging though...

I don't know man, my UPS location would NEVER haved shipped that or they would ship it but not insure it.

As long as you dont sell your package it's ok.

Where's Barzini?

Yeah that packaging job is insufficient but taking away the customers warranty seems a bit harsh if there was no damage. It's weird but sometimes the gear shipped with the smallest box arrives in better shape then a well packed double boxed item. I think the shippers are more likely to throw a bulky big box then a smaller one. I still double box but just something I noticed. I've had amps shipped to me that were just wrapped in cardboard with tape and no space around it that arrived perfect. Go figure.

How can I continue to warranty an amp that has been subject to a cross country trip inside a cardboard "bag" with almost no protection that has been thrown against many hard objects (including my porch, which scared the hell outta me btw) by UPS? First of all, shipping it this way (without adequate packaging, which I provide) violates the warranty terms anyway, but as I mentioned, although the amp is not exhibiting any performance problems now, it certainly could in the future due to the way it was shipped. I can't bear the responsibility for future issues that arise due to the irresponsibility of the shipper (in this case, Octavio's friend)...

Seems like an incredibly reasonable stance to me. I don't know you from anything other than your forum posts, but I suspect that you wish you didn't have to take that position. Given the cicumstances, you really have no choice but to limit future potential liability. I'd say the same thing if it was my amp - I'd be pissed at my "friend", but I'd say the same thing.

I totally get where you're coming from, poor packing job no doubt- but since I always play devils advocate....Does the "cheap route" mean you kicked some of the packing and shipping costs in, or was it the FREE route - meaning he paid for all of it?

Why people buy high dollar boutique amps and not spend $200.00 extra for a road case is beyond me.
Amp owner , get a case and save your headaches down the road .
Money well spent and you will thank yourself many times over !

How would a road case have helped in this case? Do you expect the person to ship the amp back for warranty repair in the road case?

I think the lesson here is save the original packaging for the amp if you can and more importantly make sure the amp is packed properly.

As for road cases, they have their place if you are playing out a lot and don't mind the extra weight. I bought one and never used it so I sold it.
