Hey 80's fans.. John Norum back to rocking a strat..

I think i'd probably go to a double noise get as well if I played singles.. in fact. I am pretty sure that Malmsteen and a lot of these other single coil guys probably did that. If Norum was stacking a DS-1 and BOss SD-1 or OD-1 into a plexi with singles, I am positive he was getting a shit load of hum.

I might look into getting one of those ESP strats with singles. Good price point and reviews on those entry level strat types. One thing for me though, I am absolutely sold on being a rosewood guy. The minute i went to a rosewood neck from a maple neck, I salvaged my beautiful koa top strat. Hated the attack and snap with the maple fretboard. Some say they don't notice the diff, I def. did.

I prefer the tone of rosewood as well, but maple just LOOKS cooler.

The ESP 400 series originally retailed at 400 bucks (hence the name), and they're on ebay and your local CL (you may have to dig).

The Vintage Plus is pricier, but comes with Duncan SSL5s in it, bigger frets, a flatter radius, and a Wilkinson vintage style bridge. They are also mildly relic'd if you like that sort of thing (I do, mine's Olympic White with rosewood). There's one for sale on here in the classifieds, 3 tone sunburst mild relic job, Duncan SSL5s, Wilkinson, rosewood board, great guitar. Check the review on Guitar World magazine's site...guy gushed about it. Said it was one of 2 guitars he reviewed this year that he HAD to have, called it a player's Strat. I think the seller on here is djpatb...send him a PM if it's in your price range, you won't regret it. Steer clear of anything LTD...

Edit: yes, djpatb 3 tone sunburst ESP vintage plus $1100.00 PP shipped lower 48. He's in Ohio. Check it out.

Joe Stump's axe of choice for YEARS.

I prefer Norum on a strat and I prefer pure, vintage style single coil pickups, 60 cycle hum and all, even with heavy rock amounts of gain. There is a realness to them and this strat purity that I don't get with any other noiseless or stacked single coils.

Brother Curt I totally agree which is why I rock this tune regularly

then again these guys all played non master old Marshalls cranked God Levels so not as practical these days. I prefer real singles, but do like the kinman noiseless as well for a more modern sound.

Conversly John Norum has also written what is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard!

Meh...who cares about this 80's dinosaur with awesome chops, killer tone, and a great sense of melody?
When he starts playing 1 finger power chords on a detuned 8-string using a shit-ton of gain while staring at the floor in front of him, then I'll be impressed.

This :D

I think that the song "Liar" by Malmsteen was about his relationship with Ron Keel back in the Steeler days.

always liked johns playing but i have to wonder?
He is playing a regular strat but the tone is almost a les paul?
Most guy's including myself play a strat for that slicing attacking present tone that a LP just cannot get.
and for the clean single coil tones a real strat cant be beat especially in positions 2 and 4.
John still kicks ass but i would love to ask him why he chose such a un-strat type tone?
it is great friggin tone even still

Thanks for posting that video. I love Norum's playing and it's cool to see him playing a strat again. I'd also love to see Doug Aldrich break out a strat again. :D
