Buy a RME Babyface it is the only sound card I know which is able to use 32 buffer size (lowest latency, chose it in the sound card panel), RME has the best drivers around.

Be sure to use asio drivers!

If your laptop computer has PC Express (like the Lenovo X200, 201, 220, 230) you could also use the quite cheap Echo Indigo IO, but you have to add a di box to use it with guitar.

The fastest sound card for stationary pc is the RME AIO (, even a hair faster than the babyface (add Di) on it....even kills every mac on latency.
Pc express is the fastest and most reliable connection latency wise on a computer, period.....disadvantage: mostly there is a tiny bit of noise pollution/interference which is caused by nearness of other electrical devices.

A lot of blah and wacky drivers around, tuning the system is not that important any more, only do some things when you encounter problems....low latency is imho absolutely necessary for playing via computer using vstis striving for a realistic feel.

Around 3,5ms latency is possible right now using RME drivers.
http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-soundpath.htm
which is a around 4 Feet hearing distance using headphones, playing guitar via vsti

BTW Using the Ipad with the alesis I-Rack and Garage Band is probably above 20 Feet  useless for me, crazy feeling.

Cheapest:
You could try to use this ASIO for all free driver, it probably will get less latency with on board soundcards, but not on par with RME´s performance. http://download.chip.eu/de/ASIO4ALL_108173.html (the source is reliable)

You're going to recommend a $750 audio interface for someone who's clearly new to DAW's? Also, what does an iPad have to do with this thread? Or did you just want to bitch about it some more?

To the OP, get a reasonable audio interface, like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or Presonus Audiobox 22VSL. Either will be low on latency, come with proper drivers, and be more than good enough to run real time VST's like software instruments and amp modelers.

Calm down, the Indigo IOx is way cheaper and nearly as fast the RME, IMHO vsti guitar playing is cool below 8 ms, most audio interfaces, especially for pcs do not deliver this performance...

My advice try and play with a RME/Indigo IoX 32 buffer size vs an IPad   (a toy IMHO) compare with 256 buffer size....there is a difference.
The old RME PCI is around 240 bucks used....kills every 8 core mac with every firewire and usb connection latency wise....

I do not recommend toys, simple as this, if an apple sticker is attached...not my problem, does not make it better.

Any yes I will recommend even a beginner the babyface, look at the used ebay prices for it, you can call that a solid investment, I would also recommend used or refurbished pcs and macs.....I am not into money burning!

Bitchin????

Do not be stupid, I recommended trying asio4all...(free)

Someone who plays guitar a bit better will certainly notice the quite annoying Ipad latency, you did not.

I am trying the Apogee in this moment, it is not for me sorry, prefer it to the alesis though, I would not buy it....same with with the Ipad...a toy in regard of music real time playing.

My Presonus works totally fine with GR5. The Indigo IOx is nice, but requires more crap to carry, i.e. DI box, mixer, preamp, etc. something to connect the guitars/mics/etc to. Plus, not everything has an ExpressCard slot. Everything has a USB2 port though.

Why are you comparing an RME to audio interfaces used on an overgrown iPod touch? They're not remotely meant for the same usage. You keep bringing up the iPad, but it has absolutely zero relevancy in this thread. You can't get the iPad to work for audio. We get it. Despite your problems, plenty of people (myself included) use it as a great audio sketchpad, which really is what it's for, in regards to GB for iOS.

The cheapest completed listing for the Babyface I could find was $600. Again, that's absurd to be recommending to a beginner. I can't tell if you're serious or trolling.

Oh, so now you're being insulting. I guess you are a troll then.

I hate latency above 8ms.... => Ipad

Simple as this!

Your experience is limited, no problem with that.

And you're an arrogant prick that assumes too much. I've been recording with computers (Windows, Mac, and Linux) for 10+ years. My experience is NOT limited. Welcome to the forum though!

Hopefully a proof I am not lying (see picture)

I try to be smart, sorry, and trustworthy...sorry, do not hurt my feelings, I am emo ;)

1. I recommended Asio4all (free) perhaps sufficient?

2. I recommended Echo IOX (around 200 USD) (pc express slot and di are unfortunately necessary)

3. I recommended Babyface (the fastest low latency external USB Interface)

4. I tried the Ipad in regards of real time music making, clearly a step backwards in real time music making sorry!

Quite simple and clear

Try it, compare it, live and learn!

All the best

Kai
