Hello! I’m looking for a great sounding, high wattage speaker for my 1x12 Bogner cube to use with a 100 W head.

I currently have a 300W EV 12L Black Label Society speaker that is a little harsh on the top end that apparently can’t be dialed out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The Celestion Red Back has been getting a lot of love.

The G12H-150 Redback has been created for players who are looking for extreme power handling but refuse to compromise on great tone. Rated at a gargantuan 150-watts, the Redback is constructed with a supersized 2-inch voice coil and features the heaviest G12 magnet. The result is a guitar speaker that sounds 100% Celestion in character, yet is primed to withstand a pummelling from a 100-watt head all by itself, and still come back for more. The Redback proves that you no longer need to choose between power and tone. With a tight, well-controlled low end, detailed midrange and more relaxed treble, Celestion’s engineering expertise has produced a truly high power guitar speaker that can still deliver balance, responsiveness and superb playability, with muscular ease. With lower power combos, expect tons of smooth, clean tone and don’t be afraid to plug in your favourite stomp box. Thinking of downsizing your cabinet? Simply hook up a single Redback to your 100-watt head and generate giant slabs of frightening, monstrous tone.

I really like the 150 watt fane Medusa, bit difficult to find now though

Emminence Super V if you can find one, or a Mesa 150 watt Black Shadow MS 12

I LOVE my Redbacks! My current favorite speaker.

Thank you for the recommendations guys. I was looking at the Redback. I wasn’t sure if anyone had any experience with them. You would think more speaker companies would make high wattage speakers for musicians not interested in hauling a 4x12.

Scumback makes a few 100 Watt speakers that sound awesome.
I have a a few that I'm not currently using if you're interested.
I would need $115 each - Shipped and PayPal'd:

(1) J75 100 Watt - 8ohm
(1) M75 100 Watt - 8ohm
(1) M55 100 Watt - 16ohm

Any specific sound you're looking for?

I agree that EV's have a presence that can be piercing.

Weber makes some high wattage speakers, too. If the EVM wasn't working out for me, I'd probably go with the Redback. Heard great things about them, but don't own any. You're right about EVMs not working with everything.

Something where the low end frequencies don’t fall apart or get fizzy (tight sound) and where the treble side of things aren’t over pronounced and become icepick/ish.

The EV has a tight low end, but there’s just this top end that is grating and you can’t dial it out.

I love SCUMBACK speakers. But I fear the 120w head (at band volume) into the 100watt speaker is a bit too much.

Yeah, you'd probably melt it with a 120w amp. You're going to be looking at something with a larger voice coil, and a different tone than you're used to. JBL, EVM-12L, something by Eminence perhaps, I can't say. With a 120w head at band volume, I'm not sure if the new Celestion Redback will work for you for very long, either. You're heading into new territory, sir! Good luck!

I see a J75 200watt LD speaker in the future. :)

Wish I could make one for you, but that would require an entirely new set of frames, voice coils, etc. I've tried a few speakers with 2" and larger voice coils, the tone changed too much for my tastes. Good luck, sir!

The Redback is awesome. It’s what you need. It’ll hang in a band context, no problem. Here’s a clip I did with my Katana through a single Redback.
