home recording advise needed.

Hi All,

Thanks for popping i. I am looking to do some home recording and am a bit overwhelmed by the various options out there. have use an old Tascam 4 track (cassette) recorder many years ago, and somhwat more recently a Fostex MR8.

These were really just used to capture ideas etc., when the popped in , which I now use a handheld zoom H2 fot. It is great for just a quick snippet when some cool riff or phrase emegres out of the noinsensical wanking but obviously has its shortcoming and limitations..

What I want now something that will allow me to make a decent multitrack recording , that is suitable for a demo or even semi crude/ semi pro cd project.

important issues for me.

ease of use
able to capture great guitar tones. I always struggle with getting a decent guitar tone to tape or digital media. This is huge for me...
Mostly I will be using a drum machine for drums but will use a live bass.
budget of 1000.00 but hope to get something for around 500.00

I alrready have the following stuff.

sm57 and stand , cables
the two ancient recorders I have now
32 Channel analog Yamaha mixing board
a good laptop PC
2 KRK Rockit 5 monitors
Boss DR5
2 JBL EON 15 powered monitors( probably not relevant but??)


Suggestions??? stand alone unit better, or software and PC?

What do I need to make some decent recordings?

try downloading reaper give that a try before you drop a ton of cash. you should be fine. check out superior 2.0 for drum sounds.

Ok so recording aside. the first issue I need to address is how to get a good guitar tone to tape. what mic, placement, mic pres. basically what and how goes between the speaker and recording devise to get an accurate representation of the tone of the amp and guitar. I get good tone, just cant capture it well.

From this article, feed back and forward to find out everything you need to know. And yes, Reaper is probably one of the best shareware based DAWs in the world. I'm a convertee from Cubase/Logic myself.

This^. You'll need something like the M-Audio Fast Track Pro to plug mics into also.

Stay away from those KRK Rokit 5s... get Equator D5s instead at that price mark.

Down load Reaper and pick an interface, any thing from Alesis or any other entry level interface. You can do this for well under $500.00.

I recently began using the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra interface bundled with ProToools MP9. Got a great deal from Musicians Friend. It's been working out very well.
