I'm looking for a set of pups to go in a new San Dimas I picked up.

I love the sound of the Seymour Duncan Custom Custom, but wish it was hotter. I've been digging around the duncan forums and can't seem to find a pickup they make which seems to fit my needs. I want to tone of a custom custom with the bottom end of a full shred, but I want to CC to have more oomph.

So I've been searching other pickup companies to try to find what I'm looking for. I've thought of the Duncan AHB-3, but I remember hating all the active pu's I've played. I'm also seriously considering putting a GFS Hot Liverpool Retrotron in the bridge, [call me crazy].

Anything else to look at to get the tone I'm seeking? Please, no Dimarzio's, I have enough of them.

The Duncan Custom is the Custom Custom wind with a Ceramic mag instead of A2.

Then it will sound nothing like the CC. I love the CC but I would imagine it being any hotter would start muddying it up (due to it's EQ curve). I think it's perfect as is and I have yet to find another pickup that sounds like it. I think the closest you could get is trying an A2 magnet in a JB. I like that one too.

Did you try Suhr Aldrich? I discovered them a short while ago and love them so much. 17.5k is plenty of output, and they sound reaaaaaally nice clean as well... They crunch like there's no tomorrow!

Yeah, I had them in my Slimer san dimas and didn't dig the tone. It was all crunch and had too much treble and not enough mids. I'm thinking of just getting another CC and adding an active tone control unit to it.

Try the GFS Crunchy Rails. Can be had for $30 new! Love mine in my Artcore. Would put it in my Les Pual if it wasn't black. Im looking for Chrome covers for it. It might be a bit hot for you, but at that price point, it's not much of a gamble. Shit, if you buy a chrome cover one, I'll trade you my black one! Give their website a look, might find something that interests you. Great pickups at a phenomial price. Their P-90s are sweet too.

If you have not tried a Rio Grande BBQ, you should! I'm really digging them lately.

call up the duncan custom shop, tell them what you want and they'll make it happen. many guys on the duncan forums have ordered custom pickups such as over wound '59s or under wound Customs and complete 1 off custom pickups to meet their needs not just modified variations of the production line pickups. they'll make whatever you want and the cost is cheaper than most of the boutique winders out there too.

a weaker JB might do better than my recommendation. it would have less high's on the top end compared to what i was going to say (and you said you didnt like the top end of the aldrich)

i was going to say to try a duncan distortion with an A2 magnet swap. the center frequencies of those two pickups are very close (5.2khz for the CC and 5.5kz for the DD, the JB is the same as the DD)

use the A2 magnet since that is what the CC uses.

id try the JB first though - very balanced pickup and responds well to the woods you use.

two great minds think alike

I have to say, I agree with this. I hear the JB with A2 is awesome, I have an SD Custom Shop Allan Holdsworth which I love, and I think the new Warren Dimartini sig pickup is in the same ballpark as those, if you're looking for that range of output. The Custom 5 has more output than the C2, but has less midrange and more bottom and top, to most people's ears I think. Output is not only a function of wraps/resistance, but also the magnet being used. Maybe you can get an aged A5 or A3 that would have better output, but still a bit softer than new A5? SD custom shop is great, I've talked to MJ there a few times, and the SD forum is pretty damn knowledgeable on how different mags shape the tone, particularly on the Custom family pickups there, everyone tries swapping magnets! Hope the rambling was helpful.

Oh yeah, when you get the YJM Fury in, can you post a review? Thanks!

Not enough mids?

I just installed a custom custom in my strat. It was a good swap from the 59. Was just what I was looking for.
Good luck on your quest, it sure can be tricky

Duncan JB with an A2 mag. You'll thank me later. ;)

Or a Suhr DSH+. There is something magic in the mids on these.
