I checked out these mini amps - solo and in a super fast recorded mix. Really suprising how good they sound! What do you think?

I really like the joyo bantamps for this purpose, home practice/playing

I have the Zakk Wylde mini stack, its my practice amp when i dont wanna turn the tube amps on, dont sound to bad.

Yeah I'm not a fan. Really really wanted to. I don't like the solid state power sections or el84. Everytime I got an amp like that I regretted it. The only exceptions of smaller amps where the ones that had full size bottles like the V2 Caldera

I love the JMP and JCM 800 1 watt amps .

I love them too, just not the combos. But when run through a real cab, they sound incredible.

I used to have one of the Chinese DSL1's. It was great when run through my 1960A. It sounded terrible through my Orange 1x12. Honestly, that Orange 1x12 was kinda bad, and it made almost everything sound so thin and boxy.

They were released in head and combo versions , if I had my choice I'd get the former but the fact that you can plug into a larger cabinet with the combo versions is great.

Each to his own, but I'd find no use for the combo version since I'd always be finding myself pluggint into a bigger cabinet, LOL.

Not a big fan of 10" speakers for distortion and even less when they're in small cabs.

It is really a matter of perspective.

Many systems can sound good to the user in the right circumstances.

Expectation are a part.

I have tons tube amps and cabs, generally solid-state amps are not equal but with the right EQ and cabinet they can pass for decent.

However this applies to some tube amps also. So, it all depends on expected outcome from what you have.

Paging psychodave and the JCA20 clips of doom !!!
I’m looking to see if I saved the clip of me slaving a Marshall Microamp into my wet dry wet rig. The tone was pretty insane… the mini Marshall was basically acting as a preamp. ?

I actually prefer SS mini or practice amps to the el84 versions the vast majority of the time.

I know el84 amps can be massaged into sounding good, if you're a modder/circuit expert like @psychodave

But as far as stock/off the shelf? They sound like ass the vast majority of the time for gainy stuff.

For edge of breakup? They can be fantastic of course

I think EL84 amps are fine are moderate volumes. Just not with a band. Provided they're a good design with maybe depth/resonance and presence controls and big-ish transformers.

I will say, though. Most of them are too loud for home use, but too quiet for band practice.

The EVH LBX was fine, though. It sounded good quiet, and it sounded great recorded through a 4x12. Did it sound as good as the 50W version? Probably not, but it sounded great on its own merits.
