How did James Hetfield connect his Mesa Power amp to his JCM800?

Whic tour are you talking about?

If I remember during the late 80's early 90's he was using the ADA MP1 with MQ1 through the Mesa Strategy 400 then he had a rackmount IIC+ and a Bradshaw switching system that probably connected all his amps together.

I am just taking a stab in the dark, I would have to go look at my old Japanese magazines.

I thought they slaved their MKIIc+'s into the power amp of the JCM 800. At least that's what I remember reading before. That was their Ride/Puppetts tone
There may be something on Monty J's site.

Thats why I asked what tour he was talking about.

He did not really use the JCM 800 with his Mesa Strategy 400(I am assuming this is what OP means by Mesa Power Amp) but I want to double check my info if I can know for sure what time frame OP is talking about.

He used a Rocktron juice extractor, with a parametric EQ.Might be able to find one used, but i
think they are hard to find.

Totally forgot they used those.

You know that the Caution Hot sticker thats on Kirk's main guitar comes off of the Rocktron Juice Extractor unit.

I'd love to see a scan of the Metallica gear portion of that Magazine.

People forget the ADA was part of his tone from that era. Probably to thicken the C+. Also he used Marshall cabs w/V30s + Mesa cabs w/EVs all blended together. At the time all his Boogie gear was loaded with premium NOS tubes. Not to mention he used high end studio level Aphex parametric EQs. Plus whatever the sound guy did at the mixing console (fine tune certain freq. ?).

Also read from a Metallica songbook where it said in the forward his C+ was "wired as a preamp" into the Mesa poweramp. I wonder what that meant, a line out from the effects send and NOT the slave out ? Doesn't really matter since his setup was so extensive that I bet not even he could achieve that tone again today.

The MK IIc+ was his main tone, then he would double
with the Marshall, and the ADA preamp, and let's not
forget the triaxis preamps,I think they were nodded
by boogie.I really think his tone came from his fingers
though. His style of down picking seems odd, with his
thumb and index finger, like he's holding his hand away
from the strings.
He's still my favorite though.

For studio tones...RTL was all Marshall, original JCM 800's (most likely loaded with EL34's) into what appears to be a pair of Marshall 4X12's with G12T-75's. MOP was the Mark IIC+ slaved into JCM800's into the same cabs. AJFA was the Mark IIC+ on most of the songs, though the Mesa Quad into the Strategy 400 was used on "The Shortest Straw" and a few other places. They switched to V30's on that album. The ADA MP-1 didn't see rhythm use until TBA, though it was a minimal part of the tone, just there as a blender supposedly.

Early on, Ken Fischer (yeah, the Trainwreck guy) worked on amps for Metallica. :D
