Listening to Master of Puppets did it for me. Aged 13. I then had to learn everything on it. I spent days just playing along to "Orion".

Similar for me. I was 12, and one of our family friends was staying at our house with me and my sister while my parents were on vacation. He let me listen to a little Metallica, including Master. Then he showed me how to press a string down on a fret, and I literally thought "all you have to do is press a string and hit it with the pick? That's easy! I can do that" and the rest, as they say, will never be read in a history book because I was never famous!

Appetite For Destruction is to blame for this whole thing. It was one of the coolest guitar albums I'd ever heard.

This.

Heard the into to Paradise City, and Sweet Child O Mine, and that was it. I knew I wanted to do THAT.

My father played when he was younger. He still has a pristine Gretsch Chet Atkins he bought new in 1958. I used to run around as a kid playing rockstar with it! Somehow I never scratched the thing! When I was sixteen my father showed me an Austin City Limits show with Stevie Ray Vaughn and it was all over. I play nothing like the man but I can still remember sitting there with my jaw on the floor watching that man play. My father saw my interest peaked and picked me up a Harmony strat knockoff and a horrible little 10w solid state amp. I was 15 then and have been at it for 20 years now, wouldn't change a thing.

I was in the 7th grade when the album in my avatar came out....i had been into music for awhile but when I heard the intro rhythm of Kiss of Death something in my brain snapped....after listening to the entire album of Lynch's raw guitar playing and tone.....I knew what must be done....started begging parents for guitar and lessons....i finally got a guitar but had to teach myself....and well....I still suck at guitar to this day...i don't deserve to be called a guitarist...but....I still have fun trying to play..
after all these years Back for the Attack is still in the #1 slot in my cd player in my truck...I still can't get enough of that album

August 16th, 1977...Cow Palace, San Fransisco Ca. Kiss... Lovegun tour. I was 13, and for some reason my parents allowed me to go to this show with 3 friends and their parents. They cut us loose once we got inside and the whole experience was surreal. Elvis died on that day also and they dedicated the show to the big "E". I've never been the same since that day.

Toss up between seeing the video for "Hot for Teacher" when it premiered on MTV, and seeing Steve Vai live with Roth on the Eat Em & Smile tour when I was 14.

Started classical lessons in Elementary school, hated it, mostly because my teacher was a douche. Then after the Roth show, I got an electric guitar, the Ozzy Tribute tab book, and a huge love for Maiden's Somewhere In Time. My Dad was my first "real" teacher. Taught me how to play Wipeout, Smoke on the Water, and Iron Man. So all my gear whoring and obsession is basically his fault. :D

I wanted to be like Steven Tyler and David Lee Roth but quickly realized I cannot sing.

As far back as I can remember I always wanted to play. Then in 5th grade my mom got me some guitar lessons. I was stoked, only I never played or practiced. I was so bad about not practicing my teacher would give me $ to buy an ice cream cone at the place next door if I'd learn the stuff I was supposed to work on  . Then in 7th grade I made friends with a kid who played. The first time I went to his house he rocked out some Slayer & Metallica on his Fender Strat. It was all she wrote after that

(1987) I was 12 years old. My friends and I wanted to start a band like Sacred Reich and Dark Angel. 3 of us wanted to play guitar so we had to race to become the best guitarist and loser would play bass.

1st place = Lead guitar
2nd place = Rhythm guitar
3rd place = bass

Rules of the race was who could play Dark Angel's "we have Arrived" and Cyclone's "Prelude to the end". I practiced relentlessly. I would ditch school to practice. I got the Lead guitarist spot. That did not sit well with the Rhythm guitarist and it was a battle for 3 years to stay on top. The best thing to keep a newbie interested is to be able to rub your friends noses in it.  Back then I would play as soon as I woke up, all day, and until I went to bed.

I started playing at 12 in about 1992. I was already playing piano (started at 7) and saxophone (Started at 10) so I already had a strong musical background. Nirvana, Hendrix, and Clapton were my early influences. I started playing Bass in 1995, and drums in 1997. I am done adding instruments. :)

Watching EVH walk down a library table soloing on Hot For Teacher gave me the bug. John Sykes' work on Whitesnake started the air guitar. Racer X closed the deal for me, but when I asked for lessons, my parents hired the school music teacher, who played classical which was not my thing. I finally switched to electric and was frustrated because I wanted to play like Nuno and Yngwie, but was being taught blues licks and Allman Bro's. which I wasn't fond of at the time. By a stroke of luck, managed to hook up with Chris Risola from Steelheart for lessons in high school. He's an amazing guitarist. He planted the right seeds, although I was never the practice all day type, so my development as a player was slow. Never managed to get to that magical level of playing those 80's guys had, even to this day for that matter, but I'm sure glad that first teacher got me hopped up on blues scales cuz that's my language of choice on guitar and of course, it's the foundation of all the rock and roll music I love.

Surfing the net in 2001. Stumbled across HC amp forum. Thought, "these guys are so cool, I should start playing just to be part of the community". Been picking and clicking ever since.

One day I'll be cool enough for TGP.

I can remember my brother having an acoustic and when i was younger i would beat around on it, I cant remeber a specific band or guitar player that planted the seed though it was probably EVH. Eventually i got my own acoustic at around 12 or so took about 2 weeks of lessons and lost interest(wish I didnt). Got the bug again when i was 17 and bought my 1st electric. Ive been playing ever since still suck but i never had the aspirations to be famous doing it, it was always just for the love of music and guitar playing

I had an acoustic guitar when I was 5-6. Never got into it, I was a sports guy. In Jr high school I started getting into music and a few friends had guitars. I picked up my brothers acoustic and was able to figure our simple 5 chords and learn some songs my friends were playing, Boston and Aerosmith stuff. I went to my first concert in 7th grad (original Journey lineup) and was awestruck by the power. I still never got into it because I didnt have an electric. I always looked at music store ads and electric guitar sales. My mom saw me looking at the ads and bought me a sweet Alverez acoustic for Christmas in 11th grade. I was able to return it for a dual hum Hondo Explorer and a Yamaha amp. I was hooked from that point forward. I liked EVH initially and had Eruption down in my first year of playing. When I heard Randy Rhoads that is what drove me to really want to play that. Without Randy I doubt I would gotten serous about it. A few years later Yngwie had a profound impact on my playing and dedication...
