How does transformer size affect sound?

Let's take, for example, a '69 Marshall 100 watt Superlead (1959). How would a 2" stack output transformer compare to the stock 1.5" tranny in terms of sound and feel? Forget all the stuff about vintage correct and brands of transformers and super secret wire and all that. Two output transformers that are the same except one is a 1.5" and the other is a 2" stack.

I'm asking because I am about to begin building a Metro clone and I upgraded the transformers to Mercury Magnetics. I have the choice between the O100JM (1.5") and the O100JM-S (2"). I'd just like to know how they will compare, tonally. I've already talked to Mercury. I'd just like to see what everyone else thinks. Doesn't have to be specific to MM products. I just want to find out how the added iron and windings affects the sound compared to a smaller version.

I was told by Mercury that "the extra iron and extra copper help to open up the tonality of the amp." Not sure what that means, though.

If it's anything like pickups, do more winds equal more output, more mids, tighter bass and less highs? Or does that not translate over to transformers?

the size of the core is not the only dependent variable. turns ratios and purpose of transformers are what is key, the wire diameter they use will change between those core sizes. i would be more concerned with build quality, plate construction methods and material, how the wires were wound, insulation properties, and other aspects before shopping for a transformer only by its core size.

There's many things that will affect how a transformer sounds. Core plate metal (steel, iron, or nickel) wire diameter and insulation type, type of interleaving and all the other specs ALL affect the sound of a transformer.

Well I have no idea what those specs are with the MM trannies. All I know is the Metro kit comes with the O100JM and, based on my tonal goal, Mercury recommended an upgrade to the 2" version of the same transformer.

size is the question :D
