How Larry DiMarzio’s pickup revolution defined the sound of 1970s guitar rock

I have a purple super distortion that I soldered a gold open face trim cover onto. C'mon, if you play guitar you have to at least have tried one Dimarzio and what better Dimarzio than an SD. It's a really cool pickup. I still have a lot more experimenting to do with it....

I think it's fucking hilarious and sad how frequently he emphasizes his "innovation" of using cream bobbins ever since Gibson finally decided to call him on his bullshit trademark and start openly selling double cream pickups. His whole website is gross. Every pickup description is littered with ™'s and ®'s.

Can't fuck with the Super Distortion though. It's a classic for a reason.

Well, THAT topic didn't take long to show up! LMAO

I never got into the super distortion, but my old square tab pafs are one of the few sets I will probably never flip

i do have some Dimarzios i like and i am glad that company is around but:
"defined the sound of 1970s guitar rock"

i don't know, sure there where kiss and in the late 70s maybe EVH, but if i think 70s, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Stones, Black Sabbath , ...
come to mind.
I don't associate any of those with a DiMarzio (super distortion).

ps.: don't start the debate if EVH actually used the super distortion on VH1, please:D

It's in the article! :ROFLMAO:

"DiMarzio used cream pickup covers on the Super Distortion to help it stand out from the pack."

And then there's this nonsense from the other essay:

Then I had an idea, “Can we make the bobbins cream?” That way everyone would be able to identify my pickups at fifty feet away in a dark smokey club (just like my tape idea but better). I found a cream-colored plastic sheet that I liked, and I began producing the first DiMarzio Cream Super Distortion® pickups. Once I could afford a mold, I mixed my custom cream color that DiMarzio eventually trademarked and still uses today. I was making everything cream, even the company price lists and catalogues were printed on cream paper stock.

I wanted DiMarzio pickups recognizable from the back of the room in a dark club. Keep in mind that all of Gibson humbucking pickups including the “Patent Applied For” were made with metal covers soldered to the base plate. The Super Distortion® was the first no cover double cream bobbin humbucking pickup. I continued with my color identity when I designed my DiMarzio Model P®, DiMarzio Model J™ (the world’s first Jazz and Precision replacements), the SDS-1™, and more all in DiMarzio cream.
"I mixed my custom cream color," as if DiMarzio's trademark actually cites a specific proprietary color and not just "cream." First double cream bobbin humbucking pickup? So Page was a time travellor? Gimme a fuckin break Larry!

Guy's a turd.

I never liked the cream color; I like bright white, black or black/white (humbucker) depending on the guitar color.

edit: I also like chrome or gold covered pickups, matching the rest of the hardware

Does anyone know the story with those schb’s he made? I have two sets in and they don’t sound like anything I have ever played before. They are like to regular humbuckers what the yjm’s are to single coils….maybe…I don’t know… terrible comparison probably but it makes sense to me…quiet, articulate…not powerful but just…toneful…..

Joe Perry, David Gilmour, and Keith Richards all used Dimarzios in the 70s.

Decent pups but little whiny bitches if someone else makes a cream colored pup..waaahhhhhh..I stick with the small winders who tell LD to shove his proprietary crap pups up his ass and make them anyway..have a whole bunch of cream pups here..FU Larry..
