It's all subjective

i personally like it, in metal, when there is a consistent rhythm tone throughout the album.

Lead/clean though, whatever the song calls for
This. Anything other than pop music I like a consistent rhythm tone throughout an album.

Generally I use one amp a little darker hard left/right then another amp a little brighter center. If using the same amp like my Quickrod, I'll use Gear 2 left and right, then Gear 1 with a touch more gain in the center. I generally use different guitars as well for left/right/center.

As mentioned above, for leads … anything goes.

I can't get this to sound right, it always ends sounding weird and disorienting. Like they're out of phase or something. Don't know what I'm doing wrong

Flip the phase button on your DAW?

there's never one absolute right answer for this, but here's a thought to chew on...
people get wrapped up into making sure each LR guitar has unique differences
I find that once an awesome guitar sound is achieved for guitar L, simply adding just a mild cut or boost on the mid and treble and retracking on guitar R is all that is needed to make a huge sound. Or, keep the settings and grab a different axe.

Of course this is going with one guitar player (me) who is often simulating a huge 2 guitar band in a hard rock/metal rhythm context.

Sorry, not literally. It just doesn't sound like a nice even stereo image, but judging by what cranky said, I'm probably doing too much

I got that setup from an interview with Dave Mustaine. He has the second guy hard left/right and his tracks are centered. I've had good luck with it but as always YMMV.

I personally don't like a center track with my stuff, but I like the idea of just tracking one of them with a different guitar, like you mentioned in your previous post. I'm going to have to try that

We began Re -Amping tonight.

Diezel Herbert on right two
PRS Archon on left two
Mesa Boogie Royal Atlantic on center tracks
PRS Archon w Chandler lil devil boost on leads.

Fkn Brutal. !

I'm guessing it sounds massive....clips or it's the B52s!
